Freebrook

Demographics

The population is only humans, although the occasional dwarf merchant or mercenary may be passing through on their way to Gratic City. Being on the main thoroughfare south to the capital of The Gratic Empire, many people here are merchants, but farmers are predominant here due to the rich soil. Even the farmers do better, with most being able to do a little better than get by.

Government

The Magistrate here is appointed by the Head Magistrate of the Gratic Empire for Gratica Province. He makes most of the town decisions.

Defences

A station of twenty-five Imperial Army soldiers can be found on the south side of the brook, but the town is bustling with mercenaries and soldiers on their way to or from Gratic City. The main place for defence in case of an emergency is the Magistrate's manor, which has a low stone wall and strong construction. Otherwise, the town is relatively undefended due to its proximity to the strong walls of Gratic City and its central location in the Province.

Industry & Trade

Most are farmers, tilling the same land that was sown by their ancestors centuries ago. A few merchants sell the town's main export; Freebrook Cloth is well-known throughout the region for its thin fibres and soft texture. Several breweries and bakeries produce pastries and ales that are known throughout the region. For aspiring mages, a shop has been recently founded for the sale of magical components and arcane texts.

Infrastructure

The Domiel Road and the old Jonitan Aqueduct pass through the town, both marvels of early Gratic engineering. The "brook" that gives the town its name is nothing more than a trickle these days, but a well-made bridge spans its shrinking banks. The hills around are filled with farms bursting with wheat, fruits, flax and vegetables, with several pastures for cows, chickens, and Dargin. The Magistrate's manor is particularly well-furnished, but most houses are the usual wattle-and-daub variety, with merchants having stone houses close to the marketplace.

Assets

Several large buildings near the market serve as warehouses for grains, animals, fruits, vegetables, and cloth. The Freebrook Magistrate's Manor contains many valuables, as do the houses of the various merchant families. However, they have learned to guard them well. Speaking of guards, the main station of The Imperial Army is just across the bridge from the marketplace, and a pair of blacksmiths provide them with weapons and armour.

Guilds and Factions

  • The Imperial Army has a guardhouse here.
  • The College of Mages has a scout here.
  • The Thieves' Collective has a scout here.
  • -A pair of merchants in town are affiliated with The Nine Daggers.   -An Imperial Temple of Alté can be found near the northern edge of town.

    History

Freebrook was founded a century ago during the waning days of the Great Drought, but due to its location has not been the site of any great events or conflicts. The one sole exception is the fire of 175 II , which burned down many of the marketplace buildings, with a couple of them still in ruins. However, the Magistrate is planning to sell the sites soon to aspiring merchants.

    Geography

The town is built on the rolling hills near Gratic City. These hills would provide wonderful views of the Gratic Plain, but are often obscured due to dust storms outside of town. The town has a small brook that barely moves, hardly a trickle.
