Gratic City

" Laid out in a large circle, Gratic City has always been divided into quarters based around which of the four markets is nearby. The true center of the city is Caldia Park, named for the Empress that ordered its construction in 134 I . Not far from The University - home to the only non-military education in the realm - is the Gratic City Temple of Etheric, resplendent in gleaming red marble. In the far west of the city is The Grand Castle, a marvel of masonry that has stood the test of time since its construction nearly three centuries ago. "   ~ The City of Cities

Demographics

The city is mostly composed of humans, with the occasional dwarf merchant or mercenary. The city contains many of The Gratic Empire's wealthiest people, and it has a large middle class of merchants and craftspeople that sell their wares across the Empire and beyond. A significant number of the town's population are rather poor, many being people forced off their lands or criminals taking advantage of the size of the city to stay hidden.

Government

The Emperor/Empress of the Gratic Empire is also Lord Magistrate of the Gratic Empire for Gratic City by default (although most have appointed an advisor to the role).

Defences

The tall wall surrounding the city is said to be unscalable, and a series of thirteen watchtowers peek out over the wall and defend the three gates at the north, east, and southwest sections of the city. The Grand Castle is the largest such fortress in the realm, being built of walls some 20 feet thick and having eight great towers of its own that form the skyline of the city.

Industry & Trade

The city is well-known for its smithing and woodworking. Grains and vegetables are grown outside of the city walls by gangs of conscripted criminals (particularly tax-evaders), but much of the food for the city is imported. Being the centre of a vast Empire, it benefits from large amounts of trade, and a significant amount of its inhabitants have their hands in various caravans travelling throughout the land.

Infrastructure

Four major plazas in the city are interconnected by the famous Ring Road, and multiple guilds (see below) are located on this road, as well as the Temple of Etheric, the Grand Castle (largest such fortress in the realm), the realm's only university, and several large parks.

Assets

The city benefits from the taxation of the Empire's nine Provinces and the bountiful riches from being the centre of a continental empire. Weapons and armour in case of a siege are stored in the various guard barracks and in the Grand Castle. The wealth of the imperial government is stored in the Grand Castle as well.

Guilds and Factions

The city contains guilds for:
  • blacksmiths
  • cobblers and leatherworkers,
  • woodworkers and carpenters,
  • masons and sculptors, and
  • engineers, especially military engineers
  • In addition, the main campus of The College of Mages is located on the grounds of the University, and The Thieves' Collective has their main guild hall in the Ither district.

    History

Its founding is 1 I on the Gratic Calender. A succession of powerful Emperors and their appointed Magistrates have grown the city from a small village to the center of a sprawling empire.

    Architecture

Stone and brick are common, with wooden roofs. Ornate marble is used in the construction of the Grand Temple of Etheric, as well as decoration of the Grand Castle. Guilds and businesses display colourful signs with symbols of their craft.

    Geography

The city was built in the center of the Gratic plain between. Because of this, there are no obvious hills or cliff faces. Water has been brought in by aqueduct since the Ither River mysteriously dried up during the Great Drought.

    Natural Resources

The flat ground and its proximity to the Ither means that agricultural success was a given. Mining here is relatively rare, but a few scattered caves exist in the area surrounding the town. Wood is brought from the Copse of Etheric to the East, if not from the Deranti Forest.
