Atlantis

Overview

The famed capital city of the Atlantis Continent is sited on the Atlantea Planetia Plain in the centre of the Northern section of the main continental shelf. The City is uniquely set up as three concentric circles, and each circle is referred to as a Ring. The preeminent ring, called the First Ring is the centre-most of the rings, the Second Ring or Middle ring , and finally the Third Ring - is the outermost ring, and the first one encountered by visitors which is largely filled in with land and no longer a full ring. They are often confused by the reversal of references.

First Ring (City Centre)

In the very middle of the City is the Spire of Poseidon, which sits totally encircled by an azure moat, the First Ring of the City being enclosed in a Magic Circle of Divine Energy. The First Circle is dedicated to the Royal Family and is a Spire projects far above the surrounding the City. The Spire contains on the Ground Floor, contains within it, the Temple dedicated to Kleito and Poseidon as the Ancestoral and Divine Founders of the Atlantean People.
The First Circle is surrounded by a concentric circle of water and a circular wall.
The Royal Spire is more than just the founding temple of Atlantis and Royal Palace of King Atlas, it also acts as the time piece for the entire city. The shadow of the Spire causes the city to act as a huge sun

Second Ring (Ring of Four Quarters)

The second ring, is the Ring of Four Quarters upon which sit the Blued Quadratia (An Orichalcum Temple of Poseidon) in the Poseidic (Northern) Quarter, the Governmental (Eastern) Quarter - that includes the Main Council and Governmental Buildings, the Park (Southern) Quarter a huge park on the land-ward side of the Ring. The final quarter of the Second Ring is the Noble (Western) Quarter.

Third Ring

The Poseidic (Northern) Quarter of the Third Ring contains two statues of key navigational elements, the Wind Tower of the Aeolian Orders and the Main Clock Tower - all four of the structures aid captains and navigators when planning their voyages and departure times.
The Governmental (Eastern) Quarter of the Third Ring contains the ambassadorial and visiting dignitary housing premises of Atlantis.
The Academic Park (Southern) Quarter of the Third Ring, holds five towers - each is lit by a different magic circle of protection and is lit to signify the different seasons. The five towers are each dedicated to different magical powers that the Magic Colleges of Atlantis and the Atlantean Library research.
The Noble (Western) Quarter is the most populated Quarter of the City and on the Third Ring, it includes the most Noble of Atlantean Families.

40,000 Human 10,000 Dwarven 10,000 Elf 20,000 Various others - including Half-Elves, Gnomes and Halflings.

Government

The City is managed by the Inner Circle. The Inner Circle is the highest ranking officials in the City. They are primarily focused on the administration of the Inner most Ring of the City - that closest to the Palace and Temple of Poseidon. The Second Circle is the Administrative Council for the second circle of the city infrastructure - that which manages the trade and research circle of the city infrastructure. The Third Curvature is the last Council that manages the outer security of the city and the general population of the City as a whole. In all the three circles are the Triple Circle - managing the whole metropolis.

Defences

The City Centre is covered with a large illusion of the original Mount Atlas. This illusion protects the city from Divine and Flying Incursions, however another effect of the illusion is to distort the sense of distance and time of non-citizens. This makes reports of the size of the city, the height of the mountain and the nature of the City layout to greatly distorted, affecting all planning of any would be attacks on the city. The city is also surrounded by a series metal walls - designed to protect each Circle from incursion from the land.

Industry & Trade

The city makes use of it's extensive crops and pastural lands surrounding it- it also has an extensive fishing fleet. However, even given this, the areas to the North and South of the City are largely undeveloped and retain their wilderness status. The City relies upon processing of natural products - in particular the generation of Orichalcum - which is blessed by Priests of Poseidon - and then sent in large convoys - or by ship - to the Dwarven Kingdom via river networks flowing past Trade Towns and Citadels.

Infrastructure

The Atlantis Infrastructure includes the broadest variety of transport, including large trade vessels for the water, extensive water flow movement generates hidden watermill power to process goods and resources. The City uses its canal networks to move raw materials into the production area of the city ( Third Circle) and for those for sale into the sales district (Second Circle).

The Canal network is also criss-crossed by bridges allowing for the flow of people and products between the rings of land that make up the city.

Guilds and Factions

The main faction controlling the city is the Temple of Poseidon. It has within it's walls the main connection to the God, and houses the laws upon which the Monarchy rests. The Temple largely controls the city in regards to all important matters as a result.

History

The City of Atlantis was created personally by Poseidon - who created a series of canals and land rings to represent the ripples formed by a single drop of Water falling into ordinary water.

It originally sat beneath the shadow of an immense Mountain - Mount Atlas - which was said to both protect the city but also act as a landmark for ships at sea and traders on the vast plain alike. This Mountain was later razed by Poseidon, providing the City with an immense resource of white and grey marble for the construction of the entire city.

The Three Concentric Rings representing what he had hoped would be an ever expanding Kingdom dedicated to himself. This however was changed by the 'Unhanding' of Hephaestus who cursed the Kingdom to keep it from growing. Since that time one of the traditional rings of the Capital has effectively been a part of the mainland as a whole - the city expands outwards to spill more fully onto the surrounding plain.

Architecture

The architecture of the City focuses on the use of Marble, Orichalcum, and other metals to create columned facades, pyramids and obelisks.

Geography

The City sits in the Middle of the Northern section of the Continent - protected on all sides - to ensure that the ocean never disturbs the City during storms, and protected from above by illusion magic.

Natural Resources

Farming resources and fish from the nearby ocean ensure the city is constantly provisioned with the highest quality foodstuffs.
