Master List of Oracular and Divination Methods

Overview

This master list, is a list of over 150 Oracular forms available in game. Anyone who takes the Omen and Oracle Divination Non Weapon Proficiency gains either Theomancy or Cryptomancy: by omens immediately - this allows for the asking of questions using that medium but also for the active recognition of attempts by supernatural beings to contact the character through everyday occurrences. Without the appropriate divination methods this cannot occur.

Theomancy is under Clerical Divination Methods.

Cryptomancy is the ability to recognize attempts to contact or communicate using natural phenomenon - but is usually limited to strange occurrences.

Alchemy Divination Methods


Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Pallomancy: by pendulums - the use of any swinging pendulum weight to indicate answers to questions.

Radiesthesia: by rods, pendulums, or other cylindrical tools - similar to the version above but also includes spinning and rolling of cylinders to determine oracles.

Animal Divination Methods

General Forms


Theriomancy (also Zoomancy) The observations of animal behaviour - this form of divination is limited to the classically associated animal divination methods using wild animals in the wild.

Apantomancy by chance encounters with animals - interpretation of random encounters with animals to determine the intended communication.

Specific Species Based Divination Methods


Ailuromancy (also Felidomancy): by domestic and wild cats (Tigers etc) This includes the observation of the size of the cat's eyes, the dilation of them as well as their behaviour. Linked to Artemis.

Alectoromancy by rooster behavior and/or rooster sacrifice - this is often done as a Rooster or Game-cock fight with the winner predicting the winning side in battle between armies. It can also include having the bird select cards and the observation of the animal after being sacrificed. Linked to Aries and Apollo.

Canomancy: by dogs - same as Game-cock fighting to determine the outcome of combat. Linked to Hecate.

Hippomancy by horse behavior - this includes not only the horse's behaviour but also the monitoring of its personal traits - hair growth, whirls and tufts in the coat, as well as patterns in the hair allowing for interpretation. Linked to Poseidon.

Ichthyomancy by fish behavior. This includes observing the fish swimming patterns and in some cases the condition of the fish entrails.

Dracomancy: by dragons - in this case it is determined through the 'reading' of old scales that have been shed. Many dragons make extensive fortunes from the ongoing sale of shed scales with some species selling a single scale for 1000gp. Each scale is said to tell future of 1000 people before it is believed to be drained of oracular use. This is rumored to be linked to Tiamat and possibly Ares.

Entomancy: by insects - the use of insect swarms to identify possible oracles and future situations. This includes the use of Bees to determine the oracle, and plagues such as Locusts and Crickets. Cicadas and Butterflies are other possible messengers of the dead and the Gods.

Hyomancy: by wild hogs. This is the use of wild hog movement but in some cases also the use of the tusks of wild hogs to determine the oracle. It is rumored that Aphrodite uses Wild Hogs to communicate only disastrous news.

Myomancy by rodent behavior. This includes the actions of rats, rabbits, and mice. The strange behaviour, tracks and even droppings of the animal in this case can be used in divination. Apollo is the Mouse-lord and commonly uses them as messengers for divination.

Myrmomancy by ant behavior. This is the observation of ant behaviour and is rumored to include how the ants move, in some cases even spelling things out and how they nest. Their activity is often strongly linked to divinations relating to hoplites and phalanxes. Zeus sometimes uses them for sending divinations.

Ophiomancy: by snakes behavior. Snakes are currently strongly linked to Apollonian divination through his control of the Pythia at Delphi. Aesculapius, the god of healing, commonly uses snakes to send omens and oracles. There is a variant of this divination that uses the hair of a Medusa - this variant is Meduseanomancy and can only be used on a severed Medusa's head in the first 24 hours of its slaying.

Arachnomancy by spiders. This is the use of Spider webs, and spider movement as a form of divination. Athena is said to use Spiders extensively for sending omens into the world.

Batrachomancy by frogs. The movement of Frogs, and the shapes formed by their egg piles are commonly used as a form of divination, often the results are attributed to Aphrodite.

Bird Based Oracles


Augury: by bird formations. The formations of birds are sometimes signs of an attempted warning or message, the source of these differ according to bird and omen/oracle type. It is known that Aphrodite uses doves, Hecate uses crows and ravens, whilst Zeus uses Eagles.

Ornithomancy by bird migration. As above for Augury.

Aphrodite Priesthood Divination Methods


Floromancy: by flowers. The love divination - this method requires the diviner to find two flowers starting with the same letter as the names of the individuals being divined - if after 10 days the flowers have grown together then the divination can determine if the relationship with last or not.

Margaritomancy: by bouncing pearls. This divination method is unique to Aphrodite and is linked to her birth - which although coming from foam is also linked to the pearls formed in the area.

Conchomancy: by shells. This is a divination method shared with Poseidon, but also used by Aphrodite. Some say the sound of the shells is the oracle of Poseidon and the shapes and swirls of the shells are said to be linked to Aphrodite's oracles.

Pphyllorhodomancy: by rose petals. This is a divination that uses falling rose petals, and in the Caliphate of Aubaydi the rose petals are said to be distributed in waters and observed as they fall to the bottom of the liquid whilst others remain floating. These methods are exclusively used by Aphrodite.

Apollonian Temple Divination Methods


Solaromancy: by the sun. This is a divination method based on the movements of the Sun and how it affects the world around the Diviner. It is unique to Apollo.

Artemis Temple Divination Methods


Lunamancy by the moon. This is based on movements of the moon, and on its effects on the world around us, which includes tidal forces.

Lunasciomancy: by shadows cast by the moon. In this case it is not just the light of the moon but also its shadows that can be used to divine the oracle messages intended by Artemis.

Pegomancy: by fountains. This is a divination done using fountains, but is linked to the Pirene Fountain in particular. This fountain has an oracle linked to it who is a Priestess of both Artemis, and Hephaestus. The Mithril Priestess will teach any follower of either Artemis or Hephaestus.

 

Astromancy Divination Methods


Astrology: Celestial Bodies. In this case it is most commonly the God or Goddess most strongly associated with the Star or Planet whose movement is being observed. Zeus and Hecate are known to both use this method extensively.

Roadomancy: Constellations. This is the use of constellations to form a divination - and many temples have sections dedicated to monitoring and recording astrological movements - this makes Roadomancy very easy to assess historically compared to other forms of divination - it can be seen where it went wrong in interpretation but also makes the making of future divinations slightly easier when using a temple's constellation records (+1D4 to skill when using such a resource)>

Horoscope: Date and Time of Birth Correlated to Atlantean Zodiac. This is not used as much as a divination method - it is seen as a one off blessing or curse that affects the character at the time of their birth.

 

Baker Occupation Divination Methods

Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Aleuromancy by flour. As the baker bakes each day the shapes and forms created by the flour can at times be used for divination, and they are most commonly sent by Demeter, but during the Winter Persephone can send the divinations through this medium.

Barbarian Class Divination Methods


Abacomancy: by dust In this case it is the dust of destroyed magical items. The amount of dust gained from an item is normally a hand-full for every 2000 XP of value for the item. More powerful items requiring stronger abrasion - and resulting in finer particles. So it is possible that the magic dust released from a ring being more than a two handed sword. It is not the size of the item but the quality of the residue that matters.One handful of dust is needed per message to be interpreted. Because it is magical dust that is being used this type of divination can attract powerful spirits, demons and devils seeking to do moe than just talk.

Turifumy
: by shapes in smoke. This is done when the Barbarian is camping and when chanting - the shapes in the smoke can be used to divine the messages of spirits and Gods alike. This is another shared divination form among the barbarian tribes. It should be noted that smoke signals can include Turifumy components.

DESERT (Scalvin and Garamante) & SEA-BASED (Varangian) BARBARIANS

Amathomancy by sand. This is a variation on the dust divination and it tends to be used by less powerful spirits when contacting the barbarian.

STEPPE (Scythian) & HIGHLAND (Carian) BARBARIANS


Xylomancy: by the appearance of burning wood. In those areas where wood is needed to stay warm, the wood itself can be used to make divinations as it burns. Often devils and demons like to use this form of divination - so greater care must be taken when using it.

FROST (Varangian - Frost Bound) BARBARIANS



Runecasting: This is identical to the Dwarven Rune casting Divination method.

 

Barkeep / Innkeeper Divination Methods


Cyathomancy: by cups. The Barkeep or Innkeeper version of this divination method involves the use of the partly empty cups of drink finished each day - the residue behind can leave shapes and forms that can be used for divination purposes.

Kypomancy by goblets. Same as the above Cyathaomancy.

Oenomancy: by wine. The barkeep can divine from the condition, frothiness and consistency of the wine that he is serving. The nature of it changes as the barkeep asks his questions. This is very different from Dionysian versions of the skill.

Bard Class Divination Methods


Rhapsodomancy: by poetry. This form of divination occurs in two forms - it can be applied with any book of poetry or any epic poem that the Bard has at their disposal. This is learnable in the Bard Guild house but also from Delphi.

Stichomancy: by books or lines. This is the use of random lines from books (and if you have access to a library - random books) - to perform a divination and gain an oracle or omen as a result. In many cases the Iliad Text is used in this manner. This is a divination method used by Hermes, Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, and many Devils - who tend to use legal books as divination methods. For some temples such as Athena's Parthenon, and in the Monastic Orders, there are holy texts that can be used for this form of divination. Thi scan be learned in the Royal Library.

Geloscopy : by laughter. This form of divination allows the entertainer to gain an oracle from the laughter of his audience - teh involuntary laughs and chorttles are a favored medium for Hermes, Dionysus, some of the Muses and several demons. This can be learned from Delphi.

Bellfounder Divination Methods

Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Chalcomancy: by striking gongs or copper bowls. The Bellfounders when casting bells must in the end - test their workmanship - the testing process can result in divinations occurring and it is common for Oracles to be sent through the bells at different points in their time in the foundry. Hephaestus is known to commonly use bell sounds for sending some warnings and oracular statements.

Blacksmith Divination Methods


Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Spodomancy: by soot The deposits of soot in an area can be used in divination. The blacksmiths who are skilled in this often do not have heir forges cleaned - and this has been known to cause excess fires in some townships. For this reason this type of divination is often illegal in larger townships - and it is common for the smith;s forge to be housed far from other parts of new settlements.

Butcher Divination Methods


The butcher has up to four forms of divination that he can choose to use on any given animal carcass. This often makes Butchers the most spiritually informed individuals in a township.

Choriomancy: by pig bladders. This is a divination method that often shows the health and condition of others. It is commonly used to determine where a person is. Whether of not they are in the underworld or not, and can be used to determine exactly where in the Underworld they are. It is said that this specialised divination power comes from the pigs that were swallowed into the Underworld when Persephone was first taken from the fields of the Earth, down into the Realm of Hades. Demeter is the goddess that rules this form of oracle.

Scapulomancy: by bovine shoulder blades. In this case, the shoulder blade of any beef animal allows the Butcher to split it after having inscribed it with different questions - the splitting of the bone can indicate the message.

Sternomancy: by ridges on the breastbone. The condition of the sternum gives the Butcher a determination of what oracles have been inflicted on the animals.

Chandler Divination Methods


Ceromancy: by dripping wax in water. This is a rare from of divination, which relates oracles from a limited number of sources. It can be used to receive messages from the dead, and from Gods and Goddesses but not from other possible sources. It is strongly tied to Aphrodite and to the God Eros who rarely appears in Atlantis.

Lampadomancy: by flame. The movement of flames is a very common oracular method and is popular with many supernatural forces, it is commonly used when on a candle by Good Aligned supernatural forces, and when on an alternate colored candle by Neutral or Evil Aligned forces, however Lords of deception have been known to use this knowledge against the Diviner.

Lychnomancy: by candles this is only used when a lot of candles are available for the use of the divination - and as such it is often limited to Cathedral and Temple establishments. The use of this type of divination does not just occur with one object - as can occur commonly but rather with 1D20 X 1D20 (1 to 400) candles in one session. White candles are used by Good Aligned supernatural forces for contact, and when other colors are used Neutral or Evil Aligned forces.

Charon Divination Methods


Numismatomancy: by coins. This is only taught by Charon - and it costs 1000gp in silver for him to be ready to teach it. However the results allow the character to divine messages from piles of silver and gold - determining from heads and tails what possible meanings are being communicated.

City Watch Divination Methods


Alphitomancy(ἄλφιτονμαντεί) is a Watch and Policing form of divination involving barley cakes or loaves of barley bread. When someone in a group is suspected of a crime, the members of the group are fed barley cakes or slices of barley bread.The guilty party would get indigestion, while all others would feel well. This form of divination is empowered by Demeter.

Cheesemonger Divination Methods

  Tyromancy: by cheese. The user seeks to divine the oracle based on the depth of the cheese, identifying the type of mold, and the scent of the cheese. Deeper level , can help predict different things.A variant of this form of divination is using Melted Cheese - this uses the effects of melting two types of cheese together as one poses the question to be answered.

Cleric/Priest Divination Methods


GENERAL DIVINATION
All priests learning Oracle and Omen Interpretation must initially choose to either take Cryptomancy or Theomancy.

Theomancy: by direct divine contact. Theomancy is the direct contact with their divinity, or if their level is too low, a direct messenger (whose title varies from temple to temple: servant, peon, shield-bearer, cup-bearer, standard bearer, quiver bearer, angel or demon) of their god or goddess. NOTE: These prohibitions are placed ONLY upon Paladins and Priests of the God Concerned. A divinity is far likely to give more information and be clearer when giving an Omen or Oracle to one of their own followers.

SPECIFIC DIVINATIONS

Archeomancy: by sacred relics. Relics and Artifacts have a special place in the World - allowing them to be used for divination - with divinities being able to send oracles or omens through the sacred objects, especially those linked to them.

Cineromancy: by the ashes of a sacrificial or ritual fire. This is the same as Pyromancy - but is applied to sacred flames.

Libanomancy : by smoke or ash from incense. This is the same as Turifumy. - but is applied to ashes and smoke of sacred incense.

Hieromancy: by studying sacrifices' entrails. This is the analysis of internal organs of a sacrificed animal or creature. The condition of the internal organs and the resulting marks can be used to interpret possible oracles or omens.

Cobbler Divination Methods


Podomancy: by the soles of one's feet. The Cobblers guild can teach it's members to divine based on the lines in the clients feet. This is an uncommon form of divination.

Scarpomancy: by old shoes. In this case the condition of old shoes can be used by the cobbler to identify not just the person's habits in the past but also their possible future based on he wear and tear of the shoes.

Cooking Divination Methods


Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Eleomancy: by oil. In this case it is the study of shapes formed by oil poured onto a heated surface and how the splatter of the oil forms different shapes on parchment as the pieces of it are passed over the bubbling oil. at a medium speed - the results are then interpreted.

Ovomancy: by eggs this is the divination art of observing the shapes formed by an egg-shell markings but also by the condition of the egg yolk once it has been cracked open.


Coppersmith Divination Methods

Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Chalcomancy: by striking gongs or copper bowls. The Coppersmiths when casting gongs and bowls chime their work to test teh forging of the bowls. - the testing process can result in divinations occurring and Hephaestus is known to use the sounds for oracular statements. If the bowl is formed from Orichalcum then Poseidon is the most likely sender of the oracle.

Crystalmasters Divination Methods


Crystalomancy: by reflective objects. The reflective surface is often surrounded by black cloth, and the Speculum will cloud over and, as it passes, small figures may be seen moving about in the crystal and certain scenes portraying the future or the past will play out in the crystal.

Spheromancy, crystal ball gazing: this is done with a clear or black crystal ball and gazed inot for a long period of time - resulting in vision similar to that above in Crystalomany.

Delphi Only Apollonian Temple Divination Methods


There are three forms of Oracle used at Delphi. The first is the Cthonian, followed by the Kilromanteion and lastly the Apollonian.

The Chthonion - this uses Hypnomancy, the sleeping at the Delphi site to receive a dream. The dream is then interpreted using Oneiromanc - the interpretation of dreams.

The Kliromanteion - this is the casting of lots from golden cloth that have been written in Malachim or Celestial Script. The lots are unique to the Delphi Temple area and can be purchased here

The final form is the Apollonian Oracle - or Daphnomancy: This is done by burning laurel wreaths/leaves and listening to the rustling of leaves from the Delphic Loracle  

Demeter Temple Divination Methods


Fructomancy by fruit is the art of divination by divining according to the size, color, internal quality , seed number and freshness of fruit when seeking answers to Oracle questions.

Sphondulomancy: by spindles. The spindles are used as types of pendulums and the threads that they have are assessed for thickness, looseness and uniformity of color to determine Oracle meanings. These are often used to determine length of life oracles.

Sycomancy: by fig leaves. This is divination by the leaves of the fig tree. Questions or propositions are written on the fig leaves. If the leaf dries quickly, it is an evil omen, but a good sign if the leaf dries slowly. The leaf patterns are also analysed and further information gained.

Demonist/Diabolist Divination Methods

Aspidomancy: by sitting in a drawn circle. The Summoner specialists of the Wizard Class, can inscribe a magic circle with letters with a Moonshard QuillThe resulting circle is walked around then analysed to determine what elements of the circle have been altered, broken or disturbed by the walk to identify the meaning of the oracle.

Demonomancy/Daemonmancy: This is not only the use of demons and other summoned beings to gain oracular readings and divinations. It can include the question asked of a summoned demon, daemon, or devil, but can also include the summoning of minor demons and devils such as Quasits and even familiars who will provide answers to questions whilst demonomancy is being conducted. (Note: It does not necessarily mean that they will tell the truth.

Dionysian Priesthood Divination Methods


Cottabomancy: by wine in a brass bowl. The diviner uses of the partly empty wine residue in a bowl and observes to see what shapes, bubbles, residue and foam are communicating as a part of the divination.

Oenomancy: by wine. The follower drinks the wine, and can divine from their own condition, from the nature of it changes on them and on the residue of the drunkenness what the oracle has shown. The follower will awaken the next day with artifacts picked up during the drunkenness and these will provide the oracle clues as to the meaning of the god's communications.

Druid Divination Methods



Ogham casting: by Ogham RunesThe Druid can cast Ogham runes as a form of divination. This allows for the writing of the runes onto wood or a set of rocks and then they can be cast to determine the oracle. NOTE: The Walking Ogham Divination below.

Walking Ogham: This is only available for a druid above 8th level. It allows the Druid to use a living forest as an oracle - reading the trees as they occur as if it were an Oracle. in Ogham. As such , the Ogham casting Oracle method must be known to the Druid. (this is automatically gained if the Druid has Ogham Casting )

Dendromancy: by trees, especially oaks, yews, or mistletoe This allows for the use of one plant to provide an oracular insight.

Stigonomancy: by burning writing onto bark This can be used with ogham to allow the writing of the script onto the wood to act as an oracle in and of itself - allowing the druid to have two checks of the interpretation instead of one.


Dwarven Divination Methods


Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Oromancy: These are oracles sought and then the shapes viewed in mountain horizon lines are used to interpret the results. The Mountain lines can alter depending on angle, but also on cloud cover and mist - so this divination is effective. Dwarves however also take into account rock formations visible, and if underground are using the lines in mining and tunneling walls as divination sources. Used above ground Demeter is said to respond to these divinations, below ground it is said to be Hades or Persephone.

Oryctomancy: by mineral prospecting, the miner in digging fro minerals can throw the dirt to the ground and determine the oracle based on the patterns that the dirt forms.

Runecasting/runic divination: This form of divination involves the use of a set of stones used for divination. They are non-magical and must be purchased, and their ownership adds no extra abilities other than being able to do divinations using them. Each set of runes is known as the Wheel of Runes.

Element Based Divination Methods

  Stareomancy: This is a by the four elements of fire, water, earth and air, combined into one divination. Unlike all the other Element-based divinations this does not require an Elemental Language to be spoken.

Air Divination Methods


This is based on the Herian Language.

Aeromancy: The collective use of cloud formations, wind currents and cosmological events such as comets to attempt to divine the past, present or future. The results of the divination are in this case from an Air Elemental

Earth Divination Methods


This is based on the Earthen Language.

Geomancy: There are two forms of Geomancy. The first is based on the idea that the planning of the Gods in their divisions of the world can still be found - written as magical ley lines throughout the World. Tracing these lines can uncover the plan and the hidden roles of topographical features in that plan. Divination using a ley line of Geomancy gives insights into the past more than into the future. But can also uncover hidden gates, portals, crypts, royal tombs, caches of knowledge and even artifacts if followed correctly. It is a popular divination form among scholars.

Geomantic Argot: This is only available to Barbarian Rune masters (who have mastered the Thorn or Thurz Rune), Dwarves, and Mages - this is the creation of a connection to the Elemental Plane of Earth - and creates a form of Magic Mouth - that will recite 3D20 words - answering multiple questions up until that word limit is met. The drain on the caster is such that they can only cast this type of Geomancy once per month.

Fire Divination Methods


This is based on the Ignian Language.

Pyromancy This is only available to Blacksmiths, and Mages - this is the creation of a connection to the Elemental Plane of Fire - and creates a form of Magic Mouth - that will recite 3D20 words - answering multiple questions up until that word limit is met. The drain on the caster is such that they can only cast this type of Pyromancy once per month.

Water Divination Methods



This is based on the Aquan Language.

Hydromancy
: This is only available to Fishermen, and Mages - this is the creation of a connection to the Elemental Plane of Water - and creates a form of Magic Mouth - that will recite 3D20 words - answering multiple questions up until that word limit is met. The drain on the caster is such that they can only cast this type of Hydromancy once per month.


Elven Divination Methods


Photomancy: by fields of light. The Elves of the Moon long learned how to divine using the play of light on almost any surface. Elves as a result have developed exceptional abilities at hiding between dapples of light and in shadows, and it is rumored to affected Elven architecture so that it allows greater amounts of light into the buildings.

Glassblowers Divination Methods


Anthracomancy: by burning coals. The patterns formed in burning coals, include messages from spirits, demons, devils, and any of the Gods linked to light and heat - including Artemis, Apollo, Zeus, Hephaestus, Hades, and even Aphrodite have been known to use this as a way of sending Oracular messages.

Crystalomancy: by reflective objects. The reflective surface is often surrounded by black cloth, and the Speculum will cloud over and, as it passes, small figures may be seen moving about in the crystal and certain scenes portraying the future or the past will play out in the crystal.

Spheromancy, crystal ball gazing: this is done with a clear or black crystal ball and gazed into for a long period of time - resulting in vision similar to that above in Crystalomany.

Captromancy: by mirrors. The same as crystalomancy, except that it uses a mirror.

Hades Priesthood Divination Methods

  Umbromancy: by fields of shade. The followers of Hades learned how to do divination on the play of shadow on different surfaces - it is considered the opposite of Photomancy - used by Ithil Elves.

Sciomancy (also Shadowmancy): by shadows and spirits, in this case the undead Shadows - and general spirits can be used to gain oracular information. But it is sometimes risky.


Healer Occupation Divination Methods


Haematomancy: The healer occupation can use he droplets of blood from patients to divine possible oracles about the patient's current and future health. It is sometimes used as a part of diagnosis.

Chresmomancy: This is a divination based on the over hearing of the ravings of lunatics and those changing into were creatures. It often requires great skill in listening and is sometimes taken by health workers, this allows them to divine messages from the ravings.

Hecate Temple Divination Methods

  Cometomancy: There are three dedicated comets of Hecate's that appear in the heavens - they are now used by Hecate followers to aid in divination. The direction of the tail, the speed of the comet and the brightness of the comets all play a actor in this divination. (Note that the comets have been seen to slow down or speed up in order to miss one another and the planets whose orbits they intersect.)

Ololygmancy: Hecate has a strong affinity to dogs and has been known to give warnings to towns through the howling of dogs. This is most noted during full moon periods. The practitioner can determine from long enough howling sessions what the goddess is attempting to convey.

Hephaestus Temple Divination Methods

All forms of blacksmith and smith based divination is ALSO available to the followers of Hephaestus - and the Dwarves who follow him have even more options.
Anthracomancy: by burning coals. Plumbomancy: by observing shapes molten lead makes when poured in water. This is the use of molten lead to 'read' the statements of the God and gain the oracle.

Topomancy: by geography and geological formations. The Hephaestian version is limited to the use of volcanoes and lava fields as well as some mountain peaks for divination.

Hera Temple Divination Methods


Austro-Aeromancy: The combined use of cloud formations, and wind currents to attempt to divine the past, present or future. This uses the movement of air currents and the visible clouds as a method of determining Oracles.


Herbalism Occupation Divination Methods


Phyllomancy: The shape and condition of leaves are used to determine the answer to questions posed by the diviner. The speed of changes in the leaves also gives some insight into the positive or negative news in any given oracle.

Phytognomy: The shapes generated by different parts of the plants, and their resulting forms allow for divination to be performed based on the forms of fruit, leaves, stems, and flowers generated by the herbs and plants used by the diviner.

Hermes Temple Divination Methods

  Symbolomancy: Hermes is linked to the Herms of the crossroads, but also to the events and items found on roads. This divination allows the follower to gain an oracle from things found on the road.

Humanoid Form Divination Methods


Somatomancy
: by the human form. This is the general human form as a whole and includes divination based on the composition of a crowd. Who among them stands out to the character and what messages can be read in to the occurrence. This is a popular divination in larger cities.

Cephalomancy: by skulls. This is not taught in civilised nations but can potentially be learned from a book in the Royal library. Barbarians have a 20% + their level , chance of being able to learn this form of divination from an elder once every level. It can be used on any skull.

Oculomancy: by eyes. Sometimes also used for health determination, this divination is taken by all followers of Aesculapius, the belief is that the eyes can show the symptoms more clearly than the descriptions. Dwarves also like to take this type of divination.

Chiromancy: by palms. This is palmistry - the reading of lines in the hand. This allows for divination about the individual themselves - including their past and their possible future. It is sometimes used by City Watch and Police Forces to determine the background of suspects who are taken into custody.


Jeweler/Gem Cutter Divination Methods


Lithomancy: by gems or stones. The quality of the gem stone, the colors, inclusions, and when cut - the facets can all be used to as a form of divination screen allowing for an oracle to be gained from gemstones.

Pessomancy: by pebbles.The same skills used in Lithomancy can be applied to non-precious stones - but requires training in recognising the variants in stone texture, seams, inclusions, lines and cracks in pebbles encountered and used in the divination.

Leather-maker Divination Methods


Acutomancy This is the use of seven needles or up to twenty one needles (always divisible by 7 to match the 7 main stitching needles used in heavy leather work. ) in a bowl of water. Needles may also be dropped onto a flat surface that has been coated with powder or flour, the designs that the needles make in the substance are then read and interpreted to gain the divination.

Locksmith Divination Methods


Cleidomancy: This has two forms. The first is as a system of Policing and determining guilt, the second is a general oracle divination. Guilt Determination: A door key is suspended on a leather cord. The name of the individual being investigated was written upon a key tied to a copy of the Iliad or Aeneid, both are held on a cord over the ring finger and the key and book will either turn or remain stationary, If innocent nothing moves - if guilty there is an impact of the two items against each other three times. Oracle Divination - the locksmith must set up a circle of letters and the key acts as a pendulum.

Mining Divination Methods


Oryctomancy: by mineral prospecting, the miner in digging fro minerals can throw the dirt to the ground and determine the oracle based on the patterns that the dirt forms.

Monk Class Divination Methods


Astragyromancy spinning body divination, this is done key training points and is the spinning of the body in a circle - the resulting 'dizziness' transforms the character into a type of oracle allowing them to perform a divination. This method can only be done during the night - implying that it is linked to the stars in some way.

Knissomancy: by incense, the choice of incense and the height to which it burns varies according to the divination being performed, as does the direction of the smoke.

Stichomancy: by books or lines. This is the use of random lines from books (and if you have access to a library - random books) - to perform a divination and gain an oracle or omen as a result. In many cases the Iliad Text is used in this manner. This is a divination method used by Hermes, Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, and many Devils - who tend to use legal books as divination methods. For some temples such as Athena's Parthenon, and in the Monastic Orders, there are holy texts that can be used for this form of divination.

Necromancy (includes body parts) Divination Methods


Necromancy: by speaking to the dead, in this case an attempt to contact the spirits of the dead. The areas that teach this are few and often difficult to get to. It is not the same as the spell 'speak with the dead' as it is seeking divination of possibilities in the future.

Necyomancy : This is a divination done by summoning damned souls, it is a dangerous form of divination, and can result in Possession attempts - so not many practice this form of Necromancy. It can however give more direct insights into occurrences in the Underworld.

Anthropomancy : by Human and Demihuman sacrifice. This is the active sacrifice of Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings, and (interestingly) Orcs. The sacrifice must be on an altar and involves the use of incantations but allows for the use of the sacrificed organs in a form of divination and the possible animation of the dead head for actual spoken prognostications and oracles. Such severed heads can be used multiple times lasting for up to 2D6 weeks. The languages that they speak changes to Hadean (the language of the dead)

 

Poseidon Temple Divination Methods


Amathomancy This is a variation on the dust divination, and uses sand as the medium. and it tends to be used by less powerful spirits when contacting the diviner

Conchomancy: by shells. This is a divination method shared with Aphrodite. Some say the sound of the shells is the oracle of Poseidon and the shapes and swirls of the shells are said to be linked to Aphrodite's oracles.

Ranger Class Divination Methods

  Ichnomancy: This is the use of footprints to perform the divination by footprints, this is often done with random animal prints but can be done with any trackable being. The difference comes when the tracked being knows they are being tracked - then this makes the divination much more difficult (- 8 in effectiveness).

Trochomancy: This is divination based on the depth of the tracks, the number of long and short wheel ruts, the crossing of them and the occurrence of other items and animals in the ruts. This all amounts to a highly detailed form of Oracle that can be gained from busy roads, this is a divination often used by Hermes.

Skatharomancy: This is a very rare form of divination, and is derived from ancient Atlantean methods that are said to pre-date the kingdom. In this case flour or sand is put on a surface and small beetle tracks are then interpreted by the reader/diviner. But it is difficult to find practitioners.

Rogue Divination Methods

Astragalomancy(also Cubomancy): This form of divination is done using at least five dice (at a minus 4 adjustment) it allows the dice to duplicate any letter and if need be any rune - giving the rogue a method of divination and oracles.

Cartomancy: Similar to above - the cards are taken to mean two sets of 26 letters or one set of 26 letters and one set of runes - then they are cast as a divination.


Taromancy: This is the case as using the normal cards but is changed in approach to match the Tarot cards.

 

Smith (All Smiths) Divination Methods

  Rabdomancy:This is the divination used prior to the making of an enchanted item. Often a weapon, but in actuality for any special enchanted item. This form of divination is done by analysing the condition of a rod, wand or staff that is used for magical purposes. The item is assessed in terms of condition, wood used, the number of charges when found and even where it was found. This divination is said to be often answered by Hecate.

Stonemasons Divination Methods


Agalmatomancy This is the divination of a question or oracle by using the qualities of a statue, and its position among other statues.This is also used a lot by Athenean followers, and has a Medusamancy variant also.

Tailor Divination Methods

Petchimancy: This is an oracle method based on the condition of brushed cloth the condition of the cloth, the direction o f the brushing, the ability of the cloth to remain in good condition and the colors in the cloth are all used in the divination.

 

Timekeepers Divination Methods


Clamancy This is a divination based on the over hearing of random shouts and cries heard in crowds or at night. Timekeepers are skilled in remembering the responses of crowds and noted events at night as apart of their role as town criers, this allows them to divine messages from supernatural forces that are being communicated to the town as a whole.

Cledonomancy: This is the ability of the timekeeper to determine an oracle being communicated from chance events or overheard words whilst walking.

Tyche Cult Divination Methods

: The use of dice, cards and random words ripped from books are used by Tyche Cultists to determine the Goddesses messages to them as Oracles.

Warrior Class Divination Methods


Aichmomancy This is divination by sharp objects in particular Spears, and it is is done by dropping many of them all at once to see what patterns are formed and then interpreting that.

  Aspidomancy: by sitting on a circular shield. This is a variant of the Wizard Aspidomancy. By sitting on a circular shield gives a strong vision and allows for the shield bearer to be given an oracle- at times they will etch the vision or words on to the shield itself.

Axiomancy: This is divination based on the shapes inside the metals of a persons axe blade and it's handle. - it is especially noted in Dwarven culture with it''s ornate axe decorations. The other element of the axe head that can be used for divination are the nicks and notches in the blade - the marks in the blade from use can also be used as a type of divination.

Belomancy: by arrows and javelins. In this case the condition of the shafts of the weapon not just the head allow for a greater accuracy in the divination using the missile weapons. It also includes the condition of the shaft AFTER use.

Macharomancy: by swords or knives. This is divination based on the shapes inside the metals of a persons blade - it is especially noted in Barbarian cultures which use damasked and ornate hand crafted blades. The other element of the blade that can be used for divination are the nicks and notches in the blade - the marks in the blade from use can also be used as a type of divination.

Weather-based Divination Methods

Chaomancy: by aerial visions
Paracelsus Nine Books Of the Nature of Things (1674) ix. 300, stated:
“Chaomancy shews its Signs by the Stars of the Air and Wind, by the discolouring, destroying of all tender and subtil things, to which the Wind is an enemy, by beating off the Flowers, Leaves, Boughs and Branches.

  If the Stars of Chaomancy are moved, Spirits fall from the superiour Air, and Voices and Answers were often heard: Also Trees are pulled up by the Roots, and Houses are thrown down.

  There are seen Hobgoblins, Household Gods, Airy Spirits, and Woodmen, &c. also a heavenly Dew and Manna falls upon Trees and Herbs.”

Chaomancy is the umbrella term used for atmospheric divination. However, there are several prophetic methods that are done as a sub-set of the Chaomancy conducted. They are taught at the Eye of the Moon, and include:

Aeromancy: The collective use of cloud formations, wind currents and cosmological events such as comets to attempt to divine the past, present or future.

Austromancy (wind divination) The use of monitoring the direction and force of wind forces to determine the prophecy.

  Meteormancy(meteors and shooting stars) These are very rare and are inherently linked to disasters - but some are said to be sacred to Hecate.

  Nephomancy (cloud divination) The observation of cloud shapes and movements, which can prophesize the future.

  Each of these forms of divination are influenced by different Olympian Gods to a lesser or greater degree.
 

Wizard Class Divination Methods


Aspidomancy: by sitting in a drawn circle. This is a variant of the normal divination - in this case it is the use of magical circles and the resulting divinations. The use of a magic circle can result in more powerful oracles being received but there is greater danger too. Hecate often uses this type of divination method to provide oracles.

Electromancy: by lightning and electricity, This is the observation of any patterns in electrical discharges - it treats electricity as writing, but can only be applied to magical lightning.

Empyromancy: by burning This version of divination results from fire based spells and the resulting shapes left behind and scorch marks on victims - which can be messages.

Metagnomy: by magic. These are divinations that result from magical items, constructions, and magical effects on objects, when used along with detect magic it allows the mage to perform divination on he magical energies being emitted by any item.

Zeus Temple Divination Methods


Astrapomancy : by lightning. This is the noting of lightning strikes near to observer and can includes analysis of strikes that have hit buildings or people. In this case it CAN include divination of lightning bolts cast by mages.

Brontomancy by thunder. Similar to Astrapomancy, but it is more commonly practiced in valley like areas to help accentuate the listening needed.

Ceraunoscopy by thunderbolt and lightning (observation). The shape and frequency of lightning can be used for divination. It is a common divination skill in Ampheres City.
