Tartessos

Overview

Tartessos (Ταρτησσός) meaning 'The Flooded Flow' is a harbor city in the Principality of Gadeiros. very close to Atlantis itself, and acts as a part of the Atlantean 'Sea Wall' defense of the CIty. Both cities often come to each others aid when needed in emergencies.

Founding

This city was first established by Geryon, the grandson of Poseidon and Arch-Devil of the Fifth Circle/Layer of Hell.

Location

The City is on the East Coast of the Western Reach in the Principality of Gadeiros near to Erytheia Island (The Red Island) in the Reach Bay that leads to Atlantis itself.

Noteworthy Civic Trade

The City has achieved great wealth due to its position near to sources of tin, and iron. But even more so the rich deposits of Silver and Mithril available to the city. The Tartessians are rich due to their access to metal. In the 4th century BC the historian Ephorus describes "a very prosperous market called Tartessos, with much tin carried by river, as well as gold and copper...
Due to the access to iron and tin - for the making of bronze the city has remained very wealthy. Lord Arganthonios, (Mithrilthon) named for his wealth in silver and noted for his extreme longevity is the current lord of the City-State under the Principality.

City and River Associations

The City sits between the twin delta outlets of the Tartessos river. Aristotle claims that it rises from the Pyrene Mountain, which lies in the middle of the Peninsula, with rivers flowing east and west out of it carrying alluvial tin and silver to the sea.
Pausanias, writing in the 2nd century AD, identified the river and gave details of the location of the city:
They say that Tartessus is a river..., running down into the sea by two mouths and that between these two mouths lies a city of the same name. The river, which is the largest and tidal...'

Government

The City is run by an Oligarchy of Silver and Mithril Masters - these are the main source for silver and mithril coming out of the Pyreene Mountain and its subordinant peaks. The Government is fully independent of other forms of central government in the area much to the envy of other city rulers in the Kingdoms.

Infrastructure

The Tartessian infrastructure is extensive, it utilises a canal system for most of its 'streets' allowing its population the luxury of boat travel to and from home, traveling all around the city by boat and ensuring that the entire city remains free of animal dung as a result. It is rumored that the system was implemented to save the city from being burned down should any of its extensive smelters or blast furnaces get out of control. Others contend that the water based transport used in the city reduces the chances of Atlantis ever invading it - as the Atlantid Saucers cannot be used here.

The City has extensive warehousing facilities for the storing of refined ore and an extensive banking system also to manage the sums of money involved in moving such metals. Dwarves are a very common sight in the area and although they dislike the need to use so many barges in the area - they do so due to the access gained to Silver (and Mithril) in the area.

Assets

The city is a medium sized city, with an extensive fleet of both normal and war ships to ply trade in and around the kingdoms. It has a strong connection to the Dwarven Kingdom because of its access to Mithril and this promotes extensive trade with them, as well as strong mutual protection treaties.

Guilds and Factions

The Miners and Metallurgists have the strongest following in this city, with it acting as a starting base for many would be miners seeking to find mithril or silver in the nearby rivers and streams around Tartessus.
