Atlas Mountain
"and, moreover, near the plain, over against its center, at a distance of about 50 stades, there stood a mountain that was low on all sides. " - Plato, Critias 113c
This mountain is part of a twofold illusion cast over the entire City by Poseidon, and maintained by the Pyramids.
First Illusionary Effect:
Visually it acts as a living illusion of the mountain that originally stood in place over the land of Atlantis. Originally it was the highest of mountains - but was reduced by Poseidon down to being a low-lying flat mountain extending out to Atlantia Planetia and this too was carved into the city around the center, resulting in a central palace, temples, and pyramids.
Second Illusionary Effect:
The Entire Atlantia Planetia area, and the City of Atlantis itself has an ongoing spell cast upon by Poseidon, that allocates an invisible Earth Elemental to each visitor to the region, and a Distance Distortion Spell
This Distance Distortion causes the Non-Atlantean individuals to misjudge the distance needed to be travelled by far more than the normal spell. It is rumored that this effect is so much more powerful because of Poseidon's position as God of Earthquakes.
Overview
ONLY VISIBLE TO NON-ATLANTEAN SUBJECTS AND RESIDENTS OF LESS THAN 1 YEAR.This mountain is part of a twofold illusion cast over the entire City by Poseidon, and maintained by the Pyramids.
First Illusionary Effect:
Heavenly High Mountain Illusion
Visually it acts as a living illusion of the mountain that originally stood in place over the land of Atlantis. Originally it was the highest of mountains - but was reduced by Poseidon down to being a low-lying flat mountain extending out to Atlantia Planetia and this too was carved into the city around the center, resulting in a central palace, temples, and pyramids.
Second Illusionary Effect:
Distance Distortion
The Entire Atlantia Planetia area, and the City of Atlantis itself has an ongoing spell cast upon by Poseidon, that allocates an invisible Earth Elemental to each visitor to the region, and a Distance Distortion Spell
This Distance Distortion causes the Non-Atlantean individuals to misjudge the distance needed to be travelled by far more than the normal spell. It is rumored that this effect is so much more powerful because of Poseidon's position as God of Earthquakes.
Purpose / Function
The Mountain illusion has two major purposes - firstly it protects the Capital City of Atlantis from Divine Retribution by Gods other than Poseidon.
Secondly it distorts the judgment of distances - dramatically extending one's views of the city and the surrounding area to make shorter distances appear much larger. Estimations of distances to be traveled are extended by a D100 X D100. Distances perceived can therefore seem at the very least double the real distance to hundreds or even a thousand times the real distance.
The Mountain Illusion prevents other Gods from getting a clear view of the City and it's inhabitants, largely protecting them from divine curses being inflicted upon them whilst they are still in the City - however once beyond the city limits - a Curse may be applied.
Alterations
The entire real mountain is now long gone - and Poseidon has replaced it with the Illusionary Version of itself.
Architecture
The Illusion of the Mountain is said to be an exact replica of the original Axis Mundi Mountain that stood where the City of Atlantis stands today. This illusion is maintained by the Axis Mundi Pyramid.
