Tessa's father never intended to send her across the Rheuthengage Mountains in a political marriage. His position - and that of his eldest daughter and heir - was secure in Grennig. It was - and remains - one of the wealthiest cities in all of the Inner Seas. Still, he raised two independently minded daughters and Tessa insisted that she marry the dashing young hier to the duchy of Wargun who was he to say no? The prince cut a fine figure on the dance floor, spoke eloquently in the trade negotiations that brought him to Grenning, and certainly had the means to take care of her.
For half a dozen years Tessa was please with her choice, the darling of the court in Wargun, living up to all her responsibilities as future duchess - except perhaps in the department of bearing an heir. When Riktar marched north with the Wargun's Watchers, as much to spite his younger brother, the rising military star, as to prove to his grandfather that we was an able commander, she never considered the fact that men often fail to return from campaign.
And so, the once vibrant Tessa was plunged into sorrow and despair. Locking her self in her room and burying herself in fine wines she drowned her sadness for another six winters. Few would have faulted her for returning to Grenning, though by this time Trahern had succeed her father as head of state. Instead, dark rumors began to swirl about her - rumors that she had thrown her lot in with the heathens that danced in under the light of Mora and Verdun on Cemetery Hill with orgies and blood rites to the Velvet Lady.
Ultimately, it was only after the birth of her first niece that she emerged. When her sister-in-law passed five years later she fully embraced her role as aunt to the three Darin children, despite their many eccentricities. All of the children adore her and while the rest of the clan appreciates the loyalty that Tessa has shown, many feel that it was her indulgences that corrupted Nylah and Nolan.

Tessa has survived the death of a beloved husband and rumors that she is a member of the Society of the Scared Shadow to thrive in the court of Wargun. With a bob of her famous iron gray bun she can send servants scurrying as she keeps a watchful eye on the three eccentric Darin children.
