Apollonian

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
The tearful Apollonian has been immortalized in sculptures, frescos and mosaics all across Luna. She is a Selenian symbol of grief, remorse, and repentance.
The Apollonian is the last person to have set foot upon Tellus, and the last Tellurian known to the Sol System. She arrived on Luna in tears sometime during the Early Spacefaring Age, after Tellus had been covered in clouds for years. She advocated fiercely for a protective isolation of her planet, becoming the first Warden of Tellus. Later in life she found love and a new life on Luna.   The nature of the horrors she endured and watched happen on her own planet is unknown. The few existing sources say she was reluctant to talk about it, and had long periods of sorrow and ennui. Her sense of guilt leads most historians to believe she fled a total climate disaster. They believe the clouds were volcanic ash clouds, perhaps the result of eruptions she herself had caused. Some historians argue it may have been the fallout after total war; a nuclear winter, with firestorms ravaging the planet.   Her descendants are plentiful among the people of Luna, although not quite so common as might be claimed. Not all of the emerging Warden of Tellus have a direct and provable line to the Apollonian, leading some historians to speculate that the Apollonian may have arrived with a small retinue of servants. The theory is controversial, and hinges on the belief that being trailed by servants would've been completely unremarkable.

Author's Notes

Her moniker is both after Apollo, god of the sun, and the Apollo space mission. Make of that what you want.   Since the keystones are very much inspired by the Sailor Scouts of Sailor Moon, having the Keystone of Earth on the moon feels only right. I thought about giving her a rabbit-themed name, but I think things would get confusing if I had too many ways to refer to this one person.

She seems like a rather interesting historical figure, I would certainly like to read more about her.

I really wonder what she had to endure. I'm glad she found happiness later in life, at least.

Having a figure from Earth who represents grief and sorrow following total destruction is both beautiful and terrifying. I love it.
