Silver Port
Government
Once appointed by those who ruled over the province of the empire before the rebellion, the Magistrate is the authority figure of the city and the surrounding lands that Silver Port can exert their power over via the might of the Silver Guard.
But with the province abandoned after the war, there is no one to assign a new Magistrate when the elderly one currently in power succumbs to his age. Shiro also has no children to speak of, leading many to assume that Katsuro Ken will take the reins when the time comes. Others hear the murmurs and whispers of the influence that the Kuromizu Clan holds and worry of the oncoming power struggle that they see as inevitable to ignite when the time comes.
Industry & Trade
The primary export is Silver from the mines east, in the mountains. These are converted both into coins and jewelry by the appropriate artisans. Even in post-revolutionary times, the town is so flush with silver that coins made of it have become their standard currency-- as copper is too rare and invaluable to be counted for anyone other than merchants or travelers to other settlements, and gold in short enough supply (Though still happily taken for its value in Silver).
Trade used to high between the Mainland and the rest of Dawn Island archipelago before the rebellion, and though the trade has almost entirely halted over the last 20 years-- the town remains an economic power on the weakened and seemingly abandoned island.
Guilds and Factions
History
What is now known as Silver Port, the wealthiest settlement in Minamishu, started off as an obscure fishing village before the arrival of the Daguo Empire in 278. Serving as the foothold of the Mainland’s conquest of the Archipelago, this village would quickly grow to accommodate their new Overlords and the trade that occurred as a consequence of their occupation before moving their capital for the province further east in Tobushu in 326 Imperial.
Fortunately for the growing economy of the trading port town, it would only be 48 years later when Silver was discovered in the region… heralding the Silverrush of 359, where the town was named Silver Port as it grew in economic power to beyond the heights it enjoyed when hosting the ruling family of the province.
As the economy swelled, so did the population and specialists it would attract to this bustling town-- bringing new enterprising criminals that over-taxed the standard Guard. To combat the growing crisis, the Magistrate at the time formed a new protection outfit to safeguard their precious resource. They dubbed themselves the creatively named Silver Guard.
Fortunes for the city continued soaring ever higher, even as the revolts of 600 Imperial took hold of the province. At first men from all over Minamush volunteered, Silver Port was no exception. But as the 40 year long conflict continued to bleed the population dry, the Shuwa pressed men into military service, bleeding the favor of the locals dry-- until people started to volunteer for the Akatsuki Rebellion instead.
When the Akatsuki Summer in 640 came, many were relieved at first. But as the heat and droughts ravaged the land, new challenges became apparent. Those who returned home were changed people, gangs plagued the city as the guard was stretched beyond their limits. A war veteran named Katsuro Ken took charge of the Silver Guard and absorbed those willing to fight for their city into the fold.
But the Silver Guard are not the only faction to grow and change in the last 20 years, for others also have their own ambitions. And as there is no authority to place someone in power when the Aging Magistrate finally expires, tensions are rising as the inevitable marches ever closer...
