The Rising Koi Saga: Chapter 17 Report
General Summary
With an audience with the two most powerful men in the city turned sour due to the assassination of Magistrate Shiro Kosuke, the Rising Koi are forced to grapple with the aftermath when the city is put under Martial Law. This did grant more opportunities for a start-up adventuring party, however, where over a late breakfast the party was able to resume talks of business with Captain Ken Katsuro and Liuentent Kondo Musa.
Seemingly cleared of any suspicion, our heroes were offered a few leads for employment:
1. The hunt for the suspected assassin, a cook within the Manor named Okaji
2. Recruitment of the Landlords of the Silverport Countryside
3. Discreet investigations into the illicit casino lurking somewhere within the city
4. Sending word to Silverhold
To aid in their ability to perform duties for the Silverguard, the party was offered tokens that would allow them to be exempt from the closing of Silverhold’s borders. The party first decided to seek more information on the suspected assassin, by asking the staff– his coworkers– about Okaji. They discovered a few clues: the man had been acting strange as of late, he had money issues, a recent death in the family and his appearance had become far more haggard as of late.
With this information in hand and concerns they wished to speak of in private, they returned to Hana’s Teahouse where they tried to piece together what information they had at hand. And with an exceptionally steep discount, they were able to pin down a location of their target: A shady bar on the docks called “The Sea Monk”. But the party was none too keen on trying their luck in unfamiliar territory without backup, so they headed to the Silverguard barracks where they hoped to enlist the help of their ally Arata. Instead, they found a new lead, a woman who matched one of the multiple descriptions from citizens who claimed to see a culprit at the scene of the crime of the burning of the Temple of Guardians. Even stranger was the fact that she had simply turned herself in, on the request that she be able to see her daughter once more– Choko, whom they had helped escort to Silverhold last month. With little to go on at first, the party decided to go ahead and ship her upriver.
On their way back to Silverhold, a trip that takes five hours to make upriver– the Akamori boys split on their own agendas: Bimbledorf decided to get more time in with the athletic boat captain, Akinari– with some tribulations of family drama before she agreed to go out with him after the current crisis in Silverport was finished. And Yengandor who questioned their prisoner further– and got some disturbing answers.
Her name was Utano, she was sold into slavery by her husband to settle some outstanding debts. This is why she went missing. Eventually, she was saved by her “Sisters” where she pledged herself to some entity known as Akkoro. She is one of eight in number, who burned down the “Temple of False Idols” at the request of her god. She claimed to turn herself in, in hopes of seeing her daughter once more… and for her weakness, she was beaten by her sisters for abandoning the coven. When pressed for more information, she looked upon them with her unnatural dark eyes. Eyes that unsettled Daiono and reminded him of the two times he had seen a similar effect– one he decided to alert Arata to. These lightless eyes, Utano explained, were a gift for her communion with her god… by consuming “his dark essence”.
Daiono explained to Arta that he had seen these sort of eyes on a man he had seen known as Nikuya The Butcher… a ghost from Arata’s past with a gang called “The Katta Boys”. Between his rage and the sinking realization of the potential connection of all these threads into a greater tapestry of what was to come, a sense of dread filled the boat as Silverhold came into view…
