Minamishu
Minamishu is the southernmost island of the Dawn Islands archipelago with a dynamic landscape of active volcanoes, hot springs, and fertile farmlands that lay closest towards the mainland. It is here, on this beautiful subtropical island, that our tale begins...
Geography
Minamishu is the third largest and southernmost of the Dawn Island’s four major islands, it is also the closest to the Mainland-- something that has had a great effect on its place in history. The island is a mountainous island composed of a complex system of volcanic ranges that provides a multitude of benefits for those living there. Not only do these towering mountains that rise to heights over 5,800 feet provide natural barriers to help keep the peace, these volcanoes also generate numerous amounts of hot springs that litter the land.
The fertile soil from the volcanic activity coupled with the subtropical climate’s heavy rainfall also allows for bountiful harvests and sprawling forests full of life within. Both of which have been ripe for exploitation by the locals to improve their living conditions.
Due to the subtropical location of the Island, winters tend to be far milder than the more northern islands of the archipelago with the winter months rarely dropping below 40°F. The Summer months do reach highs of the 80-90°F range on a regular basis.
History
Due to its proximity to the Mainland compared to the rest of the Dawn Islands, it was Minamishu that was the first to be discovered-- and by extension, annexed-- by the Daguo Empire in 278 Imperial. And the citizens of this island benefited greatly from this; for they would be the first stop for newly arrived ships to the province from the mainland, and the final stop for those departing the province.
Such trade grew these lands and their peoples into prospering communities, something not forgotten when civil unrest brewed within the archipelago. When screams of revolution roared in 600 Imperial, a majority originally sided with the Shuwa clan and their Overlords across the sea. So much so that most of the local recruits called Minamishu home. But forty years is a long time, and as the conflict continued to rage, sympathies started to wane-- by the time the Shuwa clan was eliminated, most simply wanted the war to end at best.
When the Akatsuki Summer of 640 finally came, most were thankful-- in spite of droughts and brought upon the heatwave that seemed to consume the entire season. Since then the people of Minamishu have been forced to continue alone as the Mainland has seemingly left the Dawn Islands to their fate.
A fate with new challenges. For without a centralized governing body, grudges both old and new are driving further divides along the island. Ambitions are left unchecked and bands of aimless soldiers march along the countryside taking what they desire as they attempt to carve a living for themselves away from their homelands.
