Session #9 Report
General Summary
At sunrise in the Akamori Homestead, the Arcanist cousins are woken to do chores that had been neglected in their week away from home. They were even able to see the Guardian Priests depart with 3 foot tall stone lanterns tied to their backs. It was at the first signs of breakfast that Natsu sat at the table with them, granting the boys a magical scroll each to learn a Formal Spell each after he discussed the importance of choosing one’s destiny rather than it being chosen for them.
After studying their new gifts and the second course of breakfast stirring the rest of the party awake, the group discussed their options: Go back to Silver Port to make their final preparations to face off against whatever threat Chunky the Water Elemental had become since their absence or go Northeast towards the Mountains where they could forage a special and valuable kind of mushroom that a contact of Xiyan had offered a Koban for each delivered intact first.
It was decided that the coin would prove valuable enough to pursue before delving once more into the depths of the mines. With their bellies full and the party in good spirits, they began their trek into the forests of Minamishu. And for five hours, they moved through the woods without any issue-- until they stumbled upon a childhood friend of Yengandor’s, named Suki, who was traumatized by what she had found. Curious and alarmed by the scent of rot, the party carefully went to investigate. What they found were naked, dead bodies of what looked to be former Ren soldiers that were hung by their own entrails. The only hints as to who could have done such a thing were the brutality of the massacre and the desecrated banner of the Heng Hu Legion that whatever party was responsible had used as a handtowel for the blood and viscera of the event. It appeared the bodies had been there for perhaps a day, and they were not keen to push any further but invited Suki to join them as trek back would take them far too long.
After such an alarming situation, the party continued without much delay until the sun started to set… forcing them to make camp for the night. After setting up their tents, Bimbledorf collected the humidity in the air to gather water as Diano collected firewood to make a fire; and Yengandor and Suki went on a hunt for a wild boar for food. After a meal of roasted boar, the party set up Watch shifts.
The night started calm, for the first three hours the most that happened was a family of Tanuki scouted the edges of the area as they sought out food before being alarmed at the presence of a group of humans in the woods-- until something was caught lurking within the underbrush nearby. After Suki tried to shoot it, the creature came out. A Goblin named Meh.
Meh cautiously approached the party, woken at Yengandor’s insistence, and introduced himself as he asked why the humans he met at the festival were out in the woods so close to Goblin Territories. As they explained that they were out here looking for Ghost Mushrooms, Meh offered to make a deal with them: For exchange of a knife and a meal, he would either guide them away from other scouts or he would get the mushrooms for the party so long as they also agreed to stay here. “You get killed, but you kill Goblins too-- no good for anyone.”
The Party put it to a vote, deciding that letting a local who knows the area do the job for them would be far safer and much more beneficial than risking their own lives. With the payment doled, all the party has to do now is wait until nightfall again and hope Meh upholds his end of the bargain...
