The Stag Hunt

The Stag Hunt was the final battle of a larger conflict known as the Siege of Hightide isle.  In order to seize control of the fortress on Hightide isle to reinforce his claim  on the island and expand his holding Barron Ellias VonTanf hired the Emerald Stag mercenary company to reinforce his men in order to shorten the on going siege.  Eventually the Barron called for an all out assault on the weathered old fortress still adamantly blocking his path of conquest. To save the strength of his own troops he increased the pay of the mercenaries to have them lead the assault. Unbeknownst to the Emerald Stag VonTanf had no intention of paying them more or at all and was hoping that a final assault would weaken both the defenders and the mercenaries.    At great cost the mercenaries they were able to breach the walls and seize  the fortress. With the final obstacle to his conquest removed the Barron lied and said payment was on its way and would arrive the following day. Then undercover of night he enacted his scheme passing secret orders onto his men to eliminate the mercenaries. While weakened by the days fighting and distracted by the hard won victory the men of the Emerald Stag at first offered little resistance as they were set upon many falling before they knew what was happening. As the massacre progressed small groups of the mercenaries began to form and join together and fight back. Though less numerous the mercenaries where more skilled and better trained selling their lives dearly. Eventually though the weight of numbers and the initial damage of the betrayal took its toll and while a few small groups of the once proud company where able to cut their way out and escape the vast majority of them were slain and their bodies hastily disposed of.     While the Barron saved his coin that day rumors now persist that the island is haunted by heavily armored revenants and ethereal bannermen emblasoned with the sigil of a green stag.
