Imperial Kingfisher

Imperial Kingfishers are large brightly colored kingfishers. Found living near the water these raven sized birds hunt for fish during the hours of dusk and dawn when the fish they prey upon are come near the surface to feed. Imperial kingfishers backs are a deep blue grey color accented with black speckles, helping them camouflaged themselves when viewed from above by potential predators. While this shading is on its own unremarkable it serves as a magnificent contrast to the birds vibrant countershading. The feathers on the underside of the bird colored in the spectacular muted purples, reds, yellows and blues of the sunset with each individual having its own variations. far from merely being merely ornamental this plumage serves as a type of counter shading helping the bird blend in with the sky while it hunts for fish and other meals.   Due to it above average size, brilliant coloring, and general expressiveness these birds are highly prized by nobility and other wealthy individuals making them synonymous with wealth and power. Helping with this is that while by no means easy bonds can be formed between individual birds and their owners similar to raptors used in falconry. Reinforcing this similarity is the fact that given enough time these birds can be trained to catch fish for there masters.   Having a trained Imperial Kingfisher as a companion is a sure indication that the owner is either wealthy, well connected enough, and has enough free time to acquire and train a potentially capricious animal. While it is not impossible to simply purchase a trained specimen it is difficult because of the birds tendency to bond with only a single person. Either way the possession of such a bird inherently commands respect. More than just a status symbol having one also comes with the benefit of having a keenly observant and dependable  partner readily alerting its owner to pickpocketing attempts or other more dangerous encounters.
