The Forlorn Forest

The Forlorn Forest is located in the southeast of Central Midasfjall at the foot of The Windpeak Range. It is a dark hostile place inhabited by dangerous creatures which have made their way down the mountains or up through The Underdark to hunt through the forest for lost travelers. The plants of the forest are not much better, strangling vines hang from trees seeking to wrap themselves around the necks of unsuspecting creatures, tree roots seem to rise out of the ground to trip creatures before dragging them below ground, and species of phosphorescent fungi give off dim light attracting creatures towards their poisonous spores. The Forlorn Forest is home to forest gnomes who make their homes within areas protected by magical illusion which are only detectable to outsiders with potent magical powers. Forest gnomes learn how to survive quickly lest they end up feeding the denizens of the wood.

Geography

The Forlorn Forest lies in the shadow of The Windpeak Range which casts the forest in darkness for most of the day. As such the trees that grow there have adapted to seek sustenance from other means which has left them gnarled and deformed, their leaves feel fleshy to the touch and their branches twist at sharp angles over which vines are draped. The land beneath The Forlorn Forest is dotted with hillocks which rise above the forest providing a clear view of the surrounding treetops, the tops of the rises are less populated with woodland than the valleys between the hillocks which are thick with the gnarled twisted trees and their creeping roots and strangling vines. On the ground level of the forest, the earth becomes boggy with stagnant lakes covered in black algae on the surface making it impossible for fish to live within, but that doesn't mean they aren't inhabited. The undergrowth of The Forlorn Forest is riddled with holes which are tunnel entrances dug by creatures who make their homes there that lead down to The Underdark and the forest paths are a maze of untamed thickets, ferns and fallen trees which make it easy to lose the path you were on a second ago.
