Peuli
Peuli is a small island town and a core constituency of the Rostran Archipelago Confederacy. Site of the village famously inundated with monsoon after the warnings of onieromancer Eosept Lengi went unheeded, Peuli is steeped in Esotericist mysticism and is regarded by some visitors as a place to commune with the ancient spirits of The Curved Time.
Demographics
The absolute majority (~73%) of Peulians are Rostran. The population of Peuli is primarily Low Rostran in ethnicity, though there is a significant (~30%) population of High Rostrans and ethnic Low Rostrans with limited admixture of High Rostran heritage (an additional ~23%). Civil Ovinex make up around 25% of the island's population overall, with many of these being the ovrelin retainers of the greathouse families (see Guilds and Factions). Other sentients make up a vanishingly small percentage of the local population, the vast majority of non-Rostrans present being transitory workers (e.g. construction) or tourists.
Industry & Trade
The primary industries on Peuli are religious tourism and agriculture. Aside from the ubiquitous resource of fish in the Confederacy territories, Peuli's staple crops include olives and grapes. The island does also produce small crops of coconut, pineaple, and taro, along with an array of herbs with religious as well as culinary uses, but these are typically held for local consumption. Religious goods of all types, whether grown natively or assembled from imported materials, are also a major exports. The Sebrox greathouse family (see Guilds and Factions) has deep connections to the local seaborne shipping industry, their greathouse being located within the municipal docks district itself, and operates a ruthless system of arbitrage and business management which, for better or worse, keeps the local economy flush with cash and goods in lockstep with their own financial success.
Guilds and Factions
The Vipstead (central), Sebrox (Exivaun coast), and Kar-Ivand (Five-facing slope) estates are the only remaining Greathouses on the island, the families of which trace their lineages far back in to the island's history and carry significant influence in the local government and economy. These greathouses are examples of High Rostran architectural styles and folkways disseminating into Low Rostran culture.
Intrigues between the greathouse families are subtextual, in the way that small town drama typically is, but have risen to the level of open violence as recently as 9812 AR and are only constrained by legal and religious obligations in the present day. The Sebroxes deeply enmeshed with the local shipping industry, the Kar-Ivands are often found in religious training or religion-adjacent industries (including tourism), and the Vipsteads hold major investments in all the olive orchards and vinyards on the island. Rumors of Sebrox association with Avarix Corps activities circulate from time to time, but are difficult to prove. Each family has members and allies in the local legislature, making their relations a matter of local political contention even for those unaffiliated with the greathouse system.
In any event, the ovrelin bearing the marque are frequent sights on the island, and long-term residents learn to navigate the web of social niceties and mesduat that secure the peace. In modern times, the temple-affiliated Renko family is occasionally used as a diplomatic go-between when greathouse relations break down, and, thus, the rumor is that the Renkos are looking to establish their own greathouse at some point in the future to help cement the peace in perpetuity. The latest generation of each family is evenly split between young hotheads itching for conflict and those seeking to mend fences, both of which may be driven by the same impluse: to effect change to alleviate the tedium of small town life.
Points of interest
Peuli is a relatively sleepy town and would not normally hold the interest of travelers except for its mythical associations with the dual divine natures (one furious, the other nurturing) of the great natural spirit Ixaumosana. The monumental temple constructed in remembrance of Eosept Lengi, currently the station of Hierophant Tara Renko and her acolytes, is located on the 'four-ward' slope of the island and draws the occasional pilgrim. Three sets Low Rostran village ruins and an ancient oar-marker stand also draw interest from religiously-inclined tourists because of their connection to the tale of Lengi's lost Dream Journal.
Geography
The island of Peuli is one of the many small volcanic prominence at the end of the the island chain depending from Exivaun. Located directly on the edge undersea mounts separating the C4/C5 face in Rostral C, Peuli no longer experiences volcanism and has been eroded into a low dome shape over geological time but does experience earthquakes from time to time as subterranean circumvection progresses. The highest prominence on the island, the central Peuli peak, has an altitude of 2,515' and is a gentle dome as a result of erosion. The island's location makes it a frequent waypoint on shipping routes from the capitol to Iortad and other outlying islands in the chain, though stops there tend to be more religious than logistical in intent (see Points of Interest).
Climate
The climate of Peuli is wet and tropical all around rather than having the Mediterranean climates of the leeward portions of many other, larger islands in the chain. This is owing to the fact that it's prominence (2515') is not steep enough or of sufficient height to cast deep rain-shadows. Crops that prefer drier conditions tend to be planted on the four-ward side and protected from rain inundation by netting overhangs.
