Sandi's Larder

Sandi's Larder is a small agri-mine that serves as a resupply stop for Avarix Corps privateers gone to ground in the Red Velvet Desert.

Purpose / Function

Sometimes Avarix raiding parties recover something that's more valuable than gold or jewels in the Red Velvet Desert: large quantities of water. By transporting this water (along with any stocks of fertilizer, seeds, or plant cuttings) to The Larder, the Avarix Corps helps itself to resist prolonged searches for their base or, if discovered, a siege. The Rostran Archipelago Confederacy Marine Forces and Red Velvet Association mercenaries would be hard-pressed to turn out the Avarix from their hiding places - at least, before most of the privateers escape - when Sandi's Larder makes the Avarix's supply lines significantly shorter than those of their opponents.

Architecture

Sandi's Larder is not as resource-efficient or well-organized or automated as most agri-mines, as the Avarix Corps are privateers first and farmers a distant second. Avarix Grunts, overseen by those few Rostran grunts with the knowhow, tend to the hydroponics at The Larder.   The structure itself is a series of natural caverns in one of the small rock islands which dot the Red Velvet Desert. Each large hollow connected to the next with smaller cave tunnels. The Hollows have been expanded and reinforced with baked brick vaults as appropriate for the growing operation's needs. Great efforts have been made to conceal the fuel biosynthesis reactors and dieseltech generators providing power to the grow-lights during the nighttime hours; out of a need for stealth, Avarix engines are surprisingly clean-running.

Defenses

Stealth and the solidity of stone are the Larder's best defenses. One can't besiege what one can't find.   Even if someone found the entrance, though, they would be in for a tough fight. The tunnels are deep enough that artillery and ortillery might only collapse the topmost layers, leaving survivors to dig out once the attackers move on. The only major entrance into or out of the Larder has been inlaid with land mines. Each tunnel features a dogleg or two, creating chokepoints and blind corners into which attackers will be funneled; sandbagged crew-served weapon emplacements are located at the corridor just beyond the last bend. Once in the growth caverns, attackers face Ovinex berserkers in stolen Type O "Araloi" Digitigrade Auto-Armor.   In the event of total enemy saturation, the residents of Sandi's Larder are dedicated enough to fight nearly to the last man. Even so, should things go completely against them, the defenders have a number of escape tunnels through which to flee; these tunnels are one-way trips, however, as these are rigged with demolition charges which go off once the hidden outer hatches are opened.

Nice article! It sounds like a cool location ^^ I was wondering what kind of plants/crops do they grow in the Larder?
