Barrowland

Located in the northeast corner of The Donneshire Hills is a place of quiet reverence not oft visited by the halflings known as Barrowland. Most of the small folk who die in the ‘shire have their remains interred within small gardens or under trees of their family farms. Others, such as those who pass on without such family ties, outsiders to the hills, and halflings who have died in battle, have their bones laid to rest here. Each of these groups are laid to rest in different sections of the small grassy hills in mounds and sealed hobbit holes that serve as tombs for the dead. It’s a short list of halflings who forge the bond of brotherhood in battle, but those who have and choose to do so, are laid to rest together in a special place in Barrowland known as the "Valor Tops". Normally a quiet place, Barrowland has seen recent activity as a number of halflings warriors were laid to rest here after the War Against the Darkness.

History

Almost 1600 years ago, during The Sundered Age, before the Elves of The Great Forest had officially kept the Donneshire Hills under their protection, "Baralund" was a halfling village, home to a number of misfits and outcasts who didn't fit in with polite halfling society.   When the Elves of The Great Forest called on the halflings to support them in a series of battles against orcs and other evil humanoids of the Great Forest, the halflings of Baralund responded and fought bravely. Unfortunately, their brave actions led the orcs to seek retribution against Baralund. For days the halflings fought against the slaughter and pillaging of their home. The orcs seemed single minded in their quest to eradicate the settlement and the halflings were almost wiped out until the Elves arrived to turn the tide of battle. Through their combined efforts, the elves and halflings broke the main force of the orcs, and dealt a decisive blow against the evil denizens of the Great Forest. The cost of halfling life was high though. In respect to their losses and their uncanny show of mettle against the orcs, the Elves promised that day to always keep the small folk of the Donneshire Hills under their protection. As the site of the terrible battle, Baralund was made a memorial, and halflings moved away to resettle in other areas like Northfarthing and Rooktown.

Tourism

With a reputation for being haunted, Barrowland is normally a quiet place with few visitors. This has changed a bit since the end of The War Against the Darkness, as a number of halfling veterans (such as Corvin Bootblack make their way to the Valor Tops to pay respects to their fallen comrades.
