Northfarthing

The capital city of the Donneshire Hills, Northfarthing is the largest Halfling settlement, with a population of just over 12,000. Like Rooktown to the southeast, however, true numbers are hard to pin down as Halfling farms are numerous and expansive around the city.   Northfarthing is a beautifully landscaped warren of hobbit holes intermingled with larger wooden structures, rolling hills, and tiered gardens. Due to its proximity within the Great Forest, elven influence pervades the architectural style of most of the buildings. Gentle swoops, sublime curves, and delicate swirls; when added to the halflings’ country charm, combine to give an element of whimsical mystique to the buildings and the hobbit holes that surround them. As the capital city, Northfarthing is also always the meeting place for official Halfling/Elven relations.   The city has a cobblestone market square (the aptly named Cobblestone Market) in its town square, where a bustling farmer’s market gathers every weekend in the warmer months. The fecundity of the Donneshire Hills is always on full display at this market, where goods are often bartered rather than sold. The farmers market also lies in the shadow of the aptly named Big White Barn, a large white barn exquisitely decorated in an elven cat motif. Its centralized location in Northfarthing serves as a bright reminder that although many who visit may regard this as a “city”, one needn’t look very far to see its agrarian roots.   Northfarthing is split into two distinct sectors, the "Old Hills" on the north and eastern side of town, and the "Tall Quarter"; a series of more recently built above-ground dwellings on the south side of town.   Within the Old Hills one can find: Adelaide's Bath House, The Golden Thread tailor, Uncle Beekrum's Bread Shoppe, Rose Red's Green House, the Grey Gander tavern, an artisanal cheese shop named All Glory be to Cheeses, and perhaps the most well known place to visitors of Northfarthing, The Original Foamy Flagon.   In the Tall Quarter visitors can find a more traditional General Store (All Goods Considered a carpenter, Wood You Now?; Dreiselbaart's Smithy, The Northfarthing Clerk's Office, and the Glister Glaziers.   Outside of Northfarthing is the greyhound race track, Northfarthing Downs.
