Career

Qualifications

For most ppoloms, the minimum requirement is being physically fit and accustomed to fridged and laborious breathing. The ability to do rudimentary calculations is also a plus.

Other Benefits

Though it may be dangerous at times, ppoloms are able to travel to some of the most difficult to-get-to places on earth.

A few lucky ppoloms become so familiar with the terrain that they become highly sought after for many intrepid journeys and projects.

Perception

Purpose

A ppolom is a long-distance merchant who specializes in traversing the treacherous terrain on the Bad Step to primarily transport luxury goods, raw materials and, occasionally, important messages.

Social Status

Although, these traders usually come from noble families, the actual work involves carrying heavy loads through arduous hikes; little better than a porter.

Demographics

Step Folk

The ppolom are only loosely confederated amongst the cavern capitals; with the Quinametli being the true market coordinator.   As a result of its less-than glamorous reputation, it normally falls to the extra sons in a family, plus ten accompanying servants or slaves to ease the load. The only unique contribution a nobleman makes to such a caravan is his knowledge of sums to keep track of inventory.

Operations

Dangers & Hazards

Due to the mountainous nature of their environment, the biggest dangers ppoloms face are the same that come about from changing altitudes:
  • Hyperthermia on the freezing summits
  • Distractions from earthquakes
  • Dizziness from climbing too quickly
  • Obstacles from landslides
  • Falling off the side
  • Opportunist hostiles and bandits
