Forest of Telnara
The Forest of Telnara lies to the west of the Verthik Mountains. The trees are old and gnarled, and little light breaks through the canopy of leaves. The first inhabitants of the forest were the firbolgs. They shepherded the woodlands, obtaining much druidic knowledge, living in a couple small villages beneath the trees. Greenbranch lies towards the southern end of the forest and Oakroot lies to the northwest. For countless generations, they have preserved the forest and its inhabitants from all manner of threat, whether natural or brought about by other races, but they still remain a mystery to outsiders, using magic to guard their homes from sight.
The birthplace of the elves is also in the forest. Elven legends say the first elves awoke under moonlight on the shore of Lake Ardeth, a long, narrow lake in the heart of the forest. Elves are the youngest of the humanoid races, but within a few generations, they had a schism as some longed for even more darkness while others embraced the light. The first of the twilight elves and sun elves left the forest, leaving their moon elf brethren behind.
Prior to The Altering, the moon elves were little more than wanderers beneath the canopy of the forest, while the sun and twilight elves had exposure to other humanoid races elsewhere. The small size of the moon elf population saved them from lizardfolk oppression; they were too small in number and influence to be noticed. The forest became a refuge for dwarves, humans, and sun elves trying to escape the lizardfolk, whose influence led to the construction of Eleth Telnara during The Absence.
Mountain streams flow down the Verthik Mountains, forming a shady pool at the base of the foothills, in the eaves of the forest, and flowing south. In the central forest, the river expands horizontally into what can be considered a long, narrow lake, before flowing further south, across the western Nythenor Plains, and pouring out into the Sea of Shards. Lake Ardeth separates the Duskwend River into Upper and Lower portions.
