Dun Girimbor

Dun Girimbor is the home of the Mountain Dwarves in the Girimbor Caverns and is the seat of power of the Nation of Girimbor. Despite only being dimly lit by occasional magical torches, the city is bright, whether from the glow of the forges in the Artisans and Refinery Quarters, the glittering signage in the Market Quarter, the white spires of the College Quarter, or the glowing ambiance of the Crystal Garden.   Most buildings in Dun Girimbor are carved into the stone. Most are two stories; those with exterior stairways are usually business of some kind, with the proprietors living above or below. The architecture is elegant but practical; most buildings are blocky with rounded corners, although obviously well-crafted and with time spent on distinctives such as the types of pillars used on stair and balcony railings. Outside the Refinery Quarter, nearly every building has some kind of display of the bounty of the earth, whether in the form of carved figureheads on the bottoms of railings or signs coated in a thin layer of gold.   The city is arranged in a hub around the Crystal Garden, a large, open area with statues and crystals, an underground park of sorts. Council chambers and housing for important guests surround the garden, and pathways lead out to the four quarters of the city. The Ward, headquarters of the Wardens of the Caverns, stands on the east side of the gardens. It houses the city's prison and is located closest to the Market and College Quarters, where the wardens anticipate the most lawlessness. The Council Chambers are to the south, with the Hexodyne Chapel towering to the west, with statues of The Six Eternals standing atop a wide terrace outside the doors. After The Seven Eternals became The Six Eternals, the statue of Charalyn The Augur was in the process of being destroyed, but students of the College of Mysteries absconded with it and repaired it; it now stands within the college atrium.   The Refinery Quarter, to the northwest, is closest to the mines, and consists of smelters and workshops. Few live in this quarter, choosing instead to make their homes on the fringes of the Market Quarter, northeast of the gardens, or the Artisans Quarter to the southwest. A smoothly-carved road leads through the Refinery Quarter, around the outside of the Market Quarter, and out into the Nythenor Plains; in the other direction, it heads to the Dural Lifts. In both directions, and heading north into the mines, tracks are carved for magically-propelled minecarts to aid in transporting goods around the city.   The Artisans Quarter is where the most skilled jewelsmiths, weaponsmiths, armorers, and craftspeople of all kinds ply their trade. The quarter is full of winding passageways, showing off the eccentricity and artistry of its inhabitants, while lacking in practicality; getting lost in the Artisans Quarter would be common if not for magical guideposts at intersections directing enquirers to their destinations.   The Market Quarter is quite showy, with the most distinct and elaborate signage to attract customers, unlike in the Artisans Quarter where many know the specific craftsperson they want to commission or buy from. While there are many pubs in the city, the Mithril-Bound Keg is the largest, just inside the eastern gate, to welcome travelers.   In the southeast, the College Quarter holds a few places of training and study for the city's inhabitants. The College of Might teaches the art of brute-force combat and serves as a recruiting grounds for the Wardens of the Caverns. Students become experts in heavy and blunt weapons. The College of Mysteries houses those who probe into the arcane arts. The remainder of the district contains residences, taverns and inns, and arcane workshops. Both colleges have students from all across Myas'tara; there is no other school of the arcane on the continent and the College of Might differs from the Nythan Academy in Eleth Lilanor, which favours swordplay and archery.
