Outer World

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
Languid atmospheres churn across the giants, while the moons stand bare against the threats beyond. A void detests nothing as deeply as it detests the material, and the outer planets are voids apart.
The Outer World extends from the Asteroid Belt and out into the Kuiper Belt. It is the domain of the four giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Each planet is orbited by a host of moons, some of them large enough to rival the inner planets. The outer planets are much further distanced from eachother, both literally and figuratively, than the planets of the Inner World.   While Uranus and several of the outer moons claim to be the first modern spacefarers, spacefaring was mostly contained within local orbit. Extending trade networks to the outer world took longer, and was mostly on the back of the vast Mercurian Trade Empire.   The greatest threat to the Outer World has always been the hostile entities in and beyond the Oort Cloud. Since ancient times, Neptune and Uranus have allied against outer threats. Once the domain of their keystones, today the planets collaborate to recruit and train the Sentinels, an elite force that defends against extrasolar threats. Even with the Sentinels valiant defence, the tendrils of oortic influence reach far into the dark pockets of the Outer World.

Hopefully they won't also soon have the Sun to deal with too...

They hope to soo, we do know Neptune and Uranus are taking that threat seriously enough to send at least one sentinel to Mercury.
