North Ward Settlement in Not Forgotten Realms | World Anvil

North Ward

Nobles aplenty live in the North Ward, but the character of this ward is more peaceful than that of the Sea Ward. Though it has taverns and shops to suit a variety of tastes, the tenor of the area tends toward reserved and polite. Most streets are lined with row houses inhabited by the families of prosperous people of business, investing, and civic service. They are each wealthy enough to employ a servant or two, or they endeavor to appear as such.   For the best experience in the North Ward, go there just before dawn, buy a broadsheet, and settle in at a café with a view of the street. Watch as the ward comes quietly to life around you. At first, it will be so silent that you’ll be able to hear the resident a street over who opens her sash for fresh air and clears her throat. Then the birdsong will begin, and shortly thereafter, you’ll hear and then see the drays arriving with servants. These aren’t the live-in staff used by noble houses, but people hired to come and work for a day. Most of them come from less affluent parts of the city, arriving with the tools of their trade and outfitted in their customary garb: launderers and cooks in white, chimney sweeps and housecleaners in black, valets and child-minders in gray, gardeners in green, and tutors in blue.   As these servants spread out to knock on doors and begin their work, the residents of the ward take their exits, parting fondly with spouses and children, their footsteps tramping along the sidewalks or taking them into rattling hire-coaches. In the span of just an hour, the North Ward comes to noisy life and then settles again into quiescence, until later in the day when the process reverses itself, as residents return from work and servants leave.   The liveliest, and perhaps the loveliest, part of the ward is the Cliffwatch. Here, the plateau upon which Waterdeep sits features cliffs so steep and high that the city wall is interrupted to either side of them. Some of the most lavish residences and most luxurious taverns and inns of Waterdeep stand along this space, boasting terraces and balconies that allow one to take in the beautiful sight of the countryside to the east. Yet you need not pay their high prices, for a public walkway along the cliff’s edge offers pedestrians ample opportunity to enjoy the view.   The North Ward’s colors are green and orange, and its mascot is the gentle white dove, depicted in flight. Many North Ward homes have dovecotes on their roofs, and the great flocks of the birds that circle over the city at dawn and dusk are a delight to behold.
Home to the many wealthier middle class, lesser nobles, and well-to-do merchants, North Ward is a quiet haven from the hustle and bustle of Waterdeep's commercial endeavors. Dominated by residences, this ward tends toward insular, walled villas and distinctly individual stone and timber houses. While, on the surface, it seems tedious compared to the rest of the city, North Ward seethes with intrigues of far-reaching effects hidden just beneath the surface. There is little for visitors to do within this ward beyond gawk at the marvelous houses and towers, unless they are already linked into the nobles' or GUILDS' politics.   The city watch keeps this ward under tight control, suffering noise and disruption only from the local nobles and dandies while rousting noisy trespassers. Though lightly armed, the watch maintains a constant presence in North Ward, making it as safe as one can be in a city of this size. If ever a place "closes down upon the cobbles at dusk," North Ward fits the bill.   North Ward's western boundaries consist of the High Road with a western arm extending to Shield Street along Vondhil Street and Trader's Way. Andamaar's Street marks the southern border, while the walls of the City of the Dead and the Trollwall close out the rest of the ward.

Architecture

The first thing to notice here is the lack of row buildings that dominate much of Waterdeep, Herein the lowest types of buildings are two-story cottages with expensive wood and slate decorations. The more common domiciles share such details as wrought iron fences, rooftop spires, gabled roofs, and ornate carving work on statuary and wallwork alike. The walled noble villas and grand merchant houses contain gardens with elaborate adornments. In many ways, this ward seems more prosperous than Sea Ward, but the neighbors to the west are quick to remind folk that "we need not show our wealth and station in such gaudy, tactless ways, for we are above such petty oneupsmanship."   Nearly all of the streets and alleys in North Ward are cobblestone-paved, testifying to the comparable youth of this area. The Dungsweepers' Guild members all prefer to work here, as the haughty, affluent inhabitants often pay well for additional streetsweeping (and "accidental" mishaps upon the stoops of rivals).

Swordshire House

Inn (4c•4a). A grand building that is best described as a cozy halfling burrow blown up to human-sized scale, the Swordshire attracts mostly out of towners as well as the occasional noble party looking for a unique venue for their celebrations. Notably, most hin-folk find it tacky and ridiculous. Even the most grumpy of them are forced to admit that there is no better curated collection of "hill wines" - as the wines made from sweet root vegetables made by halfling folk - to be found in Waterdeep. Its proprietor, Harnorr Leerthyn, is the Speaker for the Fellowship of Innkeepers.

Mrayvren's Bountiful Rest

Ilzantul Street, near Delzorin Street. Called the Bountiful by locals. Feature: the Gryphonsar room (additional from Ed): “Gryphonshar” was the name of a wealthy, successful, ethical, and much-loved Waterdhavian merchant who was a sometime sponsor, patron, and eventually business partner of Haeldrar Mrayvren. Andremon Gryphonsar died in the autumn of 1454 DR, but is remembered with fond nostalgia by many traders, and several rooms and features around Waterdeep have been named for him (all since his death).

    Alleys & Courts

    Alleys

North Ward's alleys are by far the safest of any ward of Waterdeep. Children have been known to safely play unattended in them on bright moonlit nights. Lan¬tern guides tend to be lone men or youths and sometimes even maids, and the alleys have a reputation more as a place for drunks to snore away the night undisturbed, than places to be avoided due to danger.

    Black Dog Alley

due south of Farwatch Tower, linking up with Watch Alley. It is named for the silent phantom of a black dog that is seen padding steadily along here on many nights. The hound wears a spiked hunting or war collar, stands as tall a goat, and has blazing red eyes. It looks at no one directly and simply walks through people and objects alike.

    Catchthief Alley

This short, narrow passage runs north off Golden Serpent Street, along the east wall of the Helm¬fast noble family villa compound. Its name comes from its site as the downfall of the infa¬mous thief Uluryk Malogh, who was slain by a hail of poisoned arrows here many winters ago after he killed the heads of two noble houses in a tavern brawl and taunted their kin by reveal¬ing himself as an agent of the banished Thieves Guild, who had been ordered to bring about their doom.   He escaped into the sewers and cellars of the city which he knew as few others do, but the Guild thought him insane and a risk to themselves, and sent agents into the city to slay him. The agents of the Guild caught him in this alley. Some folk swear they have heard the ghostly bubbling whisper of his last words, pronouncing a curse on all traitors, and lament¬ing that the poison burns so.   There are persistent rumors that he made an extensive map of the cellars and sewers, detailing traps, barriers, and locks. If it exists, it has never come to light.   The alley is also notable for the fact that much of it was once destroyed by a wyrm bursting up from below! There is an old legend in the city of a dozen or more dragonets that once hatched early and ate their way to freedom, escaping from an importer of dragon eggs into the city sewers. They dined on rats, thieves, and other skulking monsters, growing slowly in size and powers. This tale has prob¬ably grown a great deal in the telling, but a single dragon undeniably broke out of some cellar, cell, or sewer below the widest part of this alley some 70 winters ago and flew away over the city to escape into the nearby mountains to the north. Its origin, if it was learned at the time, has been forgotten.

    Manycats Alley

This way crosses two city blocks and winds through the interior of a third, running between and for the most part parallel to Julthoon Street and Traders' Way. It passes just to the south of the Adarbrent noble family villa, and is notable not only for the many cats that roam it (for which it is named), dining on leavings from several butcher shops located along its run, but also for the many carved stone heads that adorn buildings along the alley.   The carved heads are of both sexes and many races and are very lifelike—leading some fanciful folk to claim they are petrified, severed heads of once- living beings. Whatever their origin, it is widely believed in the city that the heads speak aloud from time to time, uttering cryptic messages.

    Shattercrock Alley

This short alleyway circles south from Stabbed Sailor Alley only to meet with it again, encircling^ the Margaster noble family villa. It is named for a famous incident, many summers ago, when a wizard—Phantamos of the Purple Cloak, who went on to become mighty in Art, a legend across the North—was learning to fly by means of magic and swooped wildly through a huge cart of crockery being pushed along this alley to make delivery to a shop here. For many years a tavern, the Wizard with Wings, backed onto this alley fronting on Suldoun Street, but it burned down of suspicious causes a decade ago. A fine shop offering spectacular hats, wigs, and body-manes to ladies stands on the site now.
