Cliffsedge Room & Board

Cliffsedge Room & Board   Boarding House (Modest)   Though not run-down, the Cliffsedge has certain seen better days. Well-worn and lived-in, the boarding house is a two-story affair, with a full set of basements. It has quite a few single¬room flats, as well as a distinctive “food window” on the corner of Saerdoun Street and Endcliff Lane, from which locals often stop off to buy handpies during the day.   Services & Goods    quarters, one that leads into the bakery and selling-window quarters (with a sitting room, bed chamber, kitchens, and hand-pies sales space), and a third door into the jakes (J) shared by both living-and-working spaces.   The Endcliff Lane wall of the first floor provides access to both floors and the basements. The wall has three doors on it, each of which leads to a pair of jakes (J) to each side and then to a long hallway with five doors, one for each of the rooms (Rm) down that hallway.   On either side of each of these doors are a doorway that opens onto a staircase: stairs going down into the basements to the left of the door, and stairs going up to the second floor on the right.   The second floor leads down to a similar set of hallways, again with pairs of jakes, and also a pump room with a simple Waterdhavian-style water pump for residents. It also leads out onto a simple walking balcony overlooking Encliff Lane, as well as a great balcony which is a frequent social gathering space for residents when the weather is nice. Shelssil keeps rows of simple-but-lush potted plants out here most of the year, and there are various benches and stools for those who care to relax out here. A single high-backed, slightly reclined seat out here is only ever used by Neamton Windstar (see Staff & Notable Folk).   The basements of the Cliffsedge have another fifteen rooms, in the same layout as those rooms above them. The construction down here is mostly stonework, with a pair of continual flame lanterns placed partway down each of the corridors. Unlike the hallways of the second floor, these sections do not connect-one most go back up to street level to move from one corridor to the next over. Near the stairs in each is a pair of jakes, and a pump room with a simple Waterdhavian-style water pump for residents.   Staff & Notable Folk   Shelssil Iyleth (NG Illuskan human noble) is the owner of Cliffsedge, and its proprietress. Shelssil is friendly and seems to know all of her residents personally, handily remembering names and asking after loved ones with aplomb. A tall Illuskan yaeth (transgender) woman, Shessil is fiercely protective of her residents, particularly those with children. Though she is very much a hard-nose about rents, she has been known to allow some of her residents to work off owed moneys with labor or goods, especially when their livelihoods are impacted by the very wealthy. She seems to have a very distinct grudge against most nobles, and a favorite rumor among residents of the Cliffsedge is that she used to be noble herself before she transitioned.   Ilyaremi Aumas (N Rashemi human guard) rents the very distinctive apartments and kitchens on the ground floor, from which he sells his well-loved handpies. He and Shelssil have a flirty friendship that both of them seem quite content with, and like Shelssil, Ilyaremi is something of a soft-touch for hard-luck cases. Those in tough situations in the local neighborhood know that after the seventh bell, he gives away all that remains of that day's handpies at his window (and has been spotted deliberately baking an extra tray of them at around the fifth bell on some days). The big tattooed Rashemi has no time for trouble¬makers, though, and does not hesitate to find his old war-maul if trouble comes snooping about.   Anorn Runethunder (LE hill dwarf transmuter VGM) keeps largely to himself (he is in Room 40, in the basements). A wizard-for- hire, Anorn does a lot of security work for various establishments around the North Ward, including laying the wards for the Kormallis Warehouse. Quintessentially grumpy, most of the Cliffsedge folk avoid the dwarf when he comes stomping in their direction.   Ehrshar Wyrgil (NG Chondathan human commoner) is a butcher with a fancy North Ward butcher shop that operates solely providing fine cuts of meat for the tables of wealthy Waterdhavians. He lives with a childhood friend, Neamton Windstar (CG half¬elf commoner), who has suffered from a long wasting disease over the last four years or so. Though Neamton feels guilty about imposing so on his dear friend, he has no one else to care for him, and Ehrshar wouldn't hear of anyone else doing it anyway.   On nice days, Ehrshar helps Naemton from their chamber (Room 16) on the second floor out to a comfortable chair on the great balcony, where the half-elf naps and reads. Others on the second floor surreptitiously look out for Naemton while Ehrshar is at work. In thanks, Ehrshar brings home cheap but plentiful cuts of meat and grills skewers of them out on the great balcony once a tenday or so, inviting everyone to come out and eat.   Kobrostos Laerlee (LN Tethyrian human noble) is a simple man with inkstained fingers.    He is a magistrate's clerk in his late thirties, formerly married but now five years divorced. The aggressively friendly Ilyaremi has drawn the spectacles-wearing bureaucrat out, and the two have become friends, which seemingly opened the flood-gates for “Ostos” starting to make other friends from among his neighbors. He lives in Room 8 on the first floor.   Undrera Ohrledrin (N Tethyrian human spy) is something of a “fixer.” She is frequently hired by those with the coin to do so to put her problem-solving and web of contacts to their benefit, and she always gets the job done, even if she has to sometimes ask them not to ask how she did it. A shapely, plump woman in her very early forties, Undrera has taken an interest in the shy but sweet Kobrostos. She considers Ehrshar to be something of a son she never had.   Story Seeds   A Stranger Among Us: In an effort to keep a closer watch on what goes on in Waterdeep, the Xanathar has had intellect devourers consume the minds and possess several magisterial clerks. Sadly, Kobrostos is among them. Now, however, his neighbors have begun to realize that something is amiss...
