Dragonscale
Dragonscale is surrounded by walls of stone brought from far away, and are said to be uncountable thousands of years old. The walls themselves are marked with a set of magical runes at each quarter-mile, and it is said that Dragonscale needs no defenders. The city itself is well-planned, with districts organized by what they do and a central market. Castle Ericson looms over the city, built over a hill and a natural well. At the southern end of the city is the Scaled Arena, so named for its walls being painted like the scales of a dragon. Just outside the market is the Grand Temple of Tilanos, home to an order of monks and clerics devoted to curiosity and innovation. Pilgrims often travel here.
Dragonscale is the capital of The Darkwood, and it is the seat of power from which House Darkheart rules the region. It is well known as the biggest entertainment hub on the continent. Dragonscale is so incredibly large that it's many districts are almost cities within the city, and rivalries both friendly and brutal tend to develop between neighboring areas.
Government
The seat of Count Eric VI, the city itself is run in it's day-to-day affairs by a special council composed of a representative of each district, usually minor nobility.
Defences
The giant stone walls surrounding Dragonscale are carved with magic runes that keep the walls from breaking. Towers outside of these walls provide early warning. Thousands and thousands of Imperial Legionnaires patrol the city in addition to the city guard and Count Eric's personal forces, the Oaken Army. The interior of the city is divided into districts, each walled and gated.
Industry & Trade
Dragonscale is the biggest trading hub between The Confederacy and The Empire. It is also home to a variety of specialized guilds that cater to travelers and adventurers. The city has built itself around the idea that there is a market for everything, and massive entertainment districts draw the gold of the rich from all over the continent.
Infrastructure
Wide cobblestone roadways define Dragonscale, making it easy to move about. For those that can afford it, entrepreneurial wizards and artificers have set up balloon and airship services for easy travel, as it would take two days for a man traveling by foot to get from one end of the city to the other. On the edges of the massive Loch Wynoch, docks and warehouses extend for miles to accommodate fishermen, shipping companies, and the occasional ruin diver. The sewer system is well-maintained and cleaned by dedicated employees of the city. All roads lead to the Scaled Arena.
Districts
The Outer Wall
This ring around the city is only a district by technicality, though it does have a representative at the council. It is full of the gatehouses, castles, barracks, and weapons stores that fuel the city's defense. It does include several houses and businesses that cater to the soldiers and guardsmen, as well as a couple of inns and taverns for those that are not permitted to enter the city properly but allowed to stay the night or to appeal their case of entry. It is represented by Baronet Andros. The Wet
The docks of the city are found in The Wet. Fishermen and treasure-divers, shipbuilders and explorers, pleasure yachts and traders to the lake's many villages, all are found in The Wet. The district sends fresh catches to markets all over the city, and it is absolutely full of late-night and early-morning taverns and restaurants that cater exclusively to the fishermen. The gates of The Wet are more fortified than any other district wall, as the Loch is technically undefended otherwise, though of course no lake-based invasion force has ever come for the city. The Wet is represented by Lady Katermein. The Ringing District
Perhaps the only district in Dragonscale that rarely sees tourism, The Ringing District is home to the city's engineers and builders and masons that serve to preserve the city. It sits as well on a mine of Runestone and gemstones of many varieties, workers carefully watched to ensure none are stolen. The miners usually live in other districts but come to work The Ringing, named of course for the sound of a pickaxe striking Runestone. This district is represented by Viscountess Drucil. The Giving District
Located near the city's central marketplace, The Giving serves to make comfortable the well-off merchants that travel beyond Dragonscale to sell their wares in Giving Town. There is a clear line in The Giving between establishments that serve these merchants and those that serve their hired help. It is known to be the quietest of all the districts, and is represented by Ser Miles Goldentide. The Elfin Quarter
Nearest the southern edge of Dragonscale, the Elfin Quarter is as the name suggests home to the city's booming Elf population, primarily refugees fleeing Confederate serfdom. Despite having limited defenses comparatively, Elfin is heavily patrolled by guardsmen, though things have been better for the population since the formation of the district's Citizen's Militia. Elfin produces all sorts of textile goods that are used throughout the city, and some of it's workshops make lace of such fine quality that it appears in the Imperial Palace. Elfin is overseen and represented by Lady Jael.Rat's Nest
Rat's Nest, as the name implies, is a district of the unfortunate. The city's laborers often live in Rat's Nest, in ramshackle apartments that look fit to topple at any moment. It has a high Halfling population, a busy nightlife, and some visiting nobility love to visit the district for "a sense of real danger". The Iron Shadow has a heavy presence here in the form of gangs that enforce order. Rat's Nest is also home to a nefarious Undercity of abandoned sewers, and local rumor holds it is populated by yellow-eyed, child-stealing, man-eating monsters. Rat's Nest is unaffectionate referred to as "Catchfire" by it's inhabitants. It is represented by Lord Murzen.Architecture
Blocky structures crafted of Runestone, an ancient material from the days before the Empire, define most buildings near the walls of the city. Newer constructions favor rounded and domed shapes crafted of wood and bolted with metal for support.
Geography
Dragonscale sits in the middle of The Darkwood, which gets it's name from the massive forests that fill the country. The trees have been cleared in a one mile radius around the city, but within pockets of wild remain. The city also sits next to the giant lake Loch Wynoch, which provides fresh water, fish, and the transportation of heavy materials.
Natural Resources
Aside from the giant trees for wood, Dragonscale boasts a powerful mining economy in the Ringing District, and the loch provides many useful resources.
