Paþarían Empire

The Paþarían Empire1 was major power in central Adynía over a thousand years ago, the first of its kind in the region since the fall of Zameltonía millennia before and predecessor of the modern Sikíron Empire. Its capital was Irka (modern Gedirkía).

History

Originally one of many city-states on Kóteran Peninsula, Paþaría first rose to prominence when its king Javúanus managed to (briefly) unite the tribes in the region, though his son Stárakíus is generally considered the founder of the empire, as he was the first to conquer lands beyond the peninsula. He married the núrakic princess Tirþena, and their descendants ruled Paþaría for the next three centuries, gradually adding to the empire's territory (though not without setbacks) until it became the largest empire the world had seen since ancient Zameltonía.
The Paþarían Empire (at least as sikíronian historians are concerned) ended essentially in a single day, when emperor Helúrus along with his family and important officials all drowned at sea while fleeing from an oricsh invasion of the Azókan Islands. The resulting war of succession among the nobles and generals in addition to tribes invading from the north plunged central Adynían into chaos, out of which new dynasties and kingdoms rose, each claiming to be the true successor of the old empire.

Structure

Society

Paþarían society was structured similarly to that of modern Sikíronians, with three classes -nobles, commoners and slaves- and different ranks for free citizens (two for the upper class, six for lower), except that unlike the latter there was no social mobility to speak off.
Another notable difference was that there was relatively little focus on creating a sense of unity among the different peoples inhabiting the empire, so most subjects identified with their home towns and native territories rather than as subjects of the empire.
Aside from Paþaríans, most of the inhabitants were various other Nemirkíans along with ethnicities such as Azókani, vakkals (Záali descendants on the northern Meldon Plain), Tanikaz-Dwarves (descendants of Zameltoníans), falisstríans (ancestors of Þígeans) and kaþúneans (ancient half-elves whom the paþaríans considered odd).

Government

Provinces and colonies

Paþaría was divided into six provinces and three colonies.
Azókan Islands
Covered the synonymous archipelago in southwestern Central Sea. Its main settlement was Fargútína.
Dvaþrisinna
Covered the coastal regions of the eastern Meldon Plain, bordering Vahalissía to the west. Its main settlement was Konn.
Falisstría
Covered parts of eastern Núrak, western Nemirkía and the west coast of Gold Sea, bordered by Vahalissía to the north and Nálisinna to the east. Its main settlements were Þrahissilon (modern Ahaþrys) and Marn (Miryn).
Fjókos
One of the two colonies established in western Góalanis, covering the region west of the lower Órúamil (modern Bórúm River) and bordered by Velaþría to the north. Its main settlement was Tarúsía (modern Tarsú).
Kaþúnisinna
Covered eastern Nemirkía, bordered by the Kóteran Peninsula to the north and Nálisinna to the west. Its main settlement was Kadría. The name's derived from its inhabitants, the kaþúneans, half-elves who had settled there after the fall of Zameltonía and whose language and customs were regarded as strange by the paþaríans.
Lera
A colony that covered the region around Tárútan Lake in southern Gráhúlysía and formed the northernmost part of the empire. Its main settlement was Palarea (modern Palar).
Nálisinna
Covered central Nemirkía, bordered by Falisstría to the west and Kaþúnisinna to the east. It's main settlement was Nális.
Vahalissía
Covered the northern Meldon Plain around the river Kir, bordered by Falisstría to the south and Dvaþrisinna to the east. It's main settlements were Seyhalissa (modern Seylis and Mílesis.
Velaþría
Another colony in western Góalanis, covering the area at the eastern bank of the river Órúamil. Its main settlement was Harikría (modern Hakra) at the mouth of the river.

Military

The paþarían army was mostly made up of aristocrats, who could afford weapons and arms (mundane and enchanted alike) as well as horses and slaves to carry their equipment, and had time to properly train for battle. Heavy infantry fighting in phalanx formation dominated the battlefield, with limited use of cavalry and archers.
Oracles were frequently visited before heading to battle, a trend started by Stárakíus himself, and their prophecies were taken very seriously, to the point that campaigns were delayed as long as possible until the signs were favourable. Paeans, libations and animal sacrifices were observed before, after and even in midst of battle as well.
