Summary

Alice usually appears with a pinstripe suit, lightly-curled bob, and simmering glare. Often called a pirate queen, she's best known for turning floundering pirate cove Parala into the most successful one in the sector. Until the Emerald Legion destroyed it.
Alice's current location is unknown. Most assume she and her partner Maria seek either retribution or treatment for what the Legion's experiments did to Alice's psionics.

Becoming Queen

Alice has endless disdain for those who take power for power's sake, or abuse their position of authority for selfish purposes. The pirate cove Parala had long been the proving ground of such people - ambitious pirates who wanted the prestige of its throne but none of the work of maintaining it. Fed up with seeing the port flounder under inadequate leaders, she took control.
Was crazy. Some jackweasel or another was in charge when I went to take a nap, then bam! Wake up to Alice in charge. Didn't hear a single shot. If the jackweasel was smart, he bowed to her on the way out. But if he was smart, he wouldn't be a jackweasel...
— Parala arms merchant
A station-wide parlay attracted more people, and secret arrangements with nearby governments stopped their raids. Unlike prior leaders, Alice could enforce her own rules, bringing stability. Merchants set up more permanent shops for their extra-legal clientelle and the hollowed-out asteroid flourished.   Not everyone agreed with Alice or liked working with her, but those who mattered at least respected her. She was decisive, fair, and took care of those in her command. Over the years, several tried to unseat her. Only those who could admit defeat survived the attempt.

Summary

Maria didn't become an expert underworld diplomat without spilling blood, despite what her lacy dresses and gentle voice might suggest. She was Alice's assistant on Parala and hasn't left the pirate queen's side since.
Not all of her nervousness is an act, but it takes great trust for her to let her guard down around anyone.

Maria

As operations grew, more underworld dignitaries arrived requiring special treatment. Alice hired an assistant to handle that coordination, and Maria soon came to be her closest confidant.   Many on Parala assumed the two were lovers despite there being no indication their relationship was anything but professional. Neither woman has ever provided a direct answer to the question. Today, it's clear the two are life partners, but the details of their relationship belong only to them.

Pirate's Diplomacy

Some people just need punching. Alice's flavor of leadership required more diplomacy, but that didn't change the facts. This is where her wild psychic talent in

precognition came in - once a day, she could foresee a future in which she acted on the urge to punch a particularly frustrating individual. Venting her frustration through precognition allowed her to remain calm and tactful in reality.

Losing the Throne

The Legionnaire heading the experiments was Josephine Quinn. She noted Alice's non-compliance and extreme pain and recommended the experiment be discontinued. Her superiors wiped such memories from her mind to trick her into continuing. Upon learning this, Josephine chose to defect from the Legion.
The Emerald Legion's attack on Parala was unexpected and unstoppable. Despite the pirates' ferocity, the asteroid wasn't built to survive a full military assault. Most pirates were killed, even if they'd surrendered. Alice, Maria, and a handful of others were incapacitated and taken captive, with Alice becoming a test subject. The goal of the experiment was to elevate her wild psychic talent into full psychic ability.   The tests were excrutiating, involving a variety of shocks, injections, and gasses forced upon her. She was as non-compliant as she could be, refusing to answer questions or test her abilities no matter what they did to her. Once freed, the extent of the damage became apparent. The experiments successfully unlocked a massive array of precognitive abilities, but Alice lacked any control over them. And it was likely to kill her.

Seclusion

I get a lot of numbers. No context, only a number burned into my brain. Might end up being next month's grocery bill or some other bullshit, but sometimes it's something useful to someone.
— Alice, on her visions
Without constant vigilence, metadimensional energy would flood Alice's mind and cause potentially-lethal brain damage. After nearly two years of suffering through attempts, Alice gave up on finding a cure.   The only treatments that helped were sedatives and solitude, and they couldn't grant complete reprieve. Visions of potential futures melded with reality and dreams, making it hard to determine what's real and what might never be.   She and Maria built a secret home on Nisora where they raised a family of dogs in peace. Alice took to art as a form of therapy, primarily charcoal, and Maria would fly into the city for supplies when needed. Over time, Alice accepted she was never getting her old life back. Her only option was to learn to work with her new reality. When she began to be plagued with visions of Galendra burning, she knew it was time for something to change.

Disappearance

Alice and Maria were last seen on Xeros, aiding the Gal Pals and Knight Nights in destroying an Emerald Legion facility on the planet. This was already an unusual risk for Alice to take, considering a single lapse in concentration could be what ends her life. It's not clear where the two went afterward or what their plans are. Their home on Nisora is now vacant, with only the occasional dust bunny of dog fur serving as a reminder of their lives there.

(Prose) Alice plays a game of cards and learns the future isn't always set in stone.

Author Commentary

Change of Plans
I originally had Alice create a woman-focused crew as a safe space in a male-dominated field. Later, I decided to make this setting void of gender-based discrimination, which removes the need for a such a safe space.
Stress Relief
Jareth Quinn, player character of the Night Knights campaign, was one such frustrating person who needed a good punch.

Great article! Alice is a fascinating character and I hope that wherever she and Maria went, it's not the last of them.   On a side note, I like the little busts of Alice and Maria beside a quote and their information! It's a neat, visually appealing addition. :)

I'm sure we'll see them again, I like the characters too much to let their story end here :D   And thank you! I'm hoping to make similar portraits for all characters I don't commission nicer art for.

I feel so bad for Alice for what she went through. She seems like a really fascinating and driven character. I hope her and Maria are okay, wherever they are.
