The formation of Epsia has roots spanning deep into the 4th Epoch, when the Dichotist heresy of Singulism had begun to take hold in the region. Over the course of centuries, the region had converted largely to Singulism, a high point of contention with the Arbethian Kingdom, which is traditionally Dichotist.
In a bid to secede from the Arbethian Kingdom, the monasteries of what is now Epsia came together to seek help from their neighbors, the Tensun Trading Company (in exchange for lucrative mining deals), and to write a letter to Meridian asking for their solidarity. The letter written to Meridian was a carefully crafted political, diplomatic, and argumentative masterpiece.
In response, the Tensun Trading Company threatened Arbethia with sanctions. Meridian could not show support, for it would breach their policies of neutrality. Instead, in a subtle show of solidarity, they submitted the letter to record in the Grand Library of Meridian, filing it not as a historical piece, but a diplomatic one. After a brief few months of negotiations between the Epsian monasteries and the Arbethian Kingdom, the monasteries were allowed to secede, and the Theocracy of Epsia was formed.
