The Book Tower
The Book Tower is an ancient tower in the Central Massif. Controlled and originally built by the Wizard of the Book, it contains many rooms and secrets. Originally created by magic, it has stood the test of time.
Purpose / Function
Created initially to house a vast collection of magical tomes and for magic rituals, it also serves as a place of worship for the Great Old Ones / Star Gods. The Wizard his a high ranking occultist and needs the space to carry out such things without being bothered except by the most determined followers of these Old Ones, and a few spaces are given over to other powerful individuals to practise their own rituals.
Libraries, sacrificial ritual rooms, general study spaces are spread throughout whole wings in the Tower and below. There is a constant supply of slave rooms & prison cells holding all manner of creatures to experiment with or on. Guard rooms are rare, and aberrations & enchanted protections are spaced out irregularly to surprise & scare away those forbidden to enter.
Alterations
A number of dimensional portals have been built into the walls using magical sigils. These are activated when unfriendly creatures get within 30 feet of them. Aberrations and Elementals pour out usually one at a time. They are randomised so nobody is sure what they may face.
The rooms in the actual tower has been enlarged artificially appearing normal on the outside and about 60 feet wider and higher on the inside. This allows larger entities to be summoned. Also, a mix of magic artifacts, sigils and blood were applied during the magical construction to prevent any summoned creature escaping the building overall. It also makes it easier to dismiss them. A codeword from the wizard can shrink or expand these when they speak it.
Physical traps are randomly set up and maintained throughout the overall tower complex. Being random it means that very few can ever be truly sure what they will face. Many have a mix of magic tied in with physical components making it harder to overcome them.
Architecture
Strangely advanced and primitive, the Tower has taken in human or human-like aspects all the while taking in elements of strange warped elements that appear in Star God temples & in the Far Realms. These sometime confuse, terrify, and sicken creatures not used to the designs.
Defenses
The dimensional portals, and the traps, are the primary defences when inside the tower complex. A number of Animated Armours are present, set up to activate when unwelcome creatures enters through specific entryways.
A few Aberrations & Elementals are left to wander the whole complex to pick off and spy on any creature within it. They are given specific 'living rooms' in the complex below the actual tower. These hold a huge set of tunnels & rough caverns deep into the mountain. At the centre is a rumoured cavern holding portals into the Elemental Realms and the Far Realms, as well as a cavern holding a Star God.
These are dangerous places to travel as no-one knows the exact layout and are rumoured to be unstable enough that they could collapse.
History
Created hundreds of years ago by the Wizard of the Book. He had arrived in the region from the west. Ancient Celtic stories say that the Wizard came from the sea and was called to the Central Massif at the behest of their master. Exactly who is master is is unknown, but knowing the Central Massif it is likely something truly ancient from the birth of the world.
The Wizard lived with the local Celtic tribes travelling in and out of the Massif. During this time he was building the tower using slaves from creatures found in the region and summoned entities. The Celts tolerated them as they caused no problems for them and even helped the odd person.
After a few years and shortly before the Romans arrived, the Wizard left. Never seen since, the nearby Celts remember, and seem to be the only ones not bothered by anything from the tower. Everybody else seems to be fair game, and the place is generally left alone. Rumours persist that a grimoire of great power is held in the tower by the Wizard.
