Personal history
Baldwin grew up around Eschbach where his family had spent 6 previous generations as tavern owners. They had originated in the region having a streak of Saxon blood in them like most in Eschbach. He grew up around the tavern learning the trade and expanded it to take in an inn too. From a young age he knew he wanted to do this knowing one day it would pay off.
Never a fighter, he could still handle a cudgel ad his fists in a fight. This helps when trouble breaks out in the tavern allowing him to knock some sense into drunken patrons. Like many in Eschbach, he has (and still practises) basic spear & archery skills allowing him to act as part of the town's militia.
Not overly wealthy but still better off than most, he rarely shows it off. Now with the town expanding he is wary of any other tavern or inn opening. If this happens he plans to get a share of the property to expand his business. To this end he has allowed the Eschbach Shields to have a couple of the Thieves of Frankia to 'work' the tavern. This stops any unwanted incidents happening to his family, patrons and business, while the Thieves are known to take a bigger interest in any new tavern getting in to the illict side of such a trade. He can use them for information and get kickbacks himself in the form of information & coin. Although unhappy with the Thieves guild, at least he knows they won't move against him personally due to Lord Fyrwin, someone who is younger but well-known in the region, and a regular customer. Also with the Lord's contact with them and to a degree has the ear of them as to where, when & who they can target helps.
Baldwin prefers to stay neutral in all matters, but loves his work and family, as well as pride in what is now the 'Old District' of Eschbach. He is forever hearing stories, rumours, myths & legends, as well as some of the wilder exploits, from those that both frequent his establishment and those passing through. He can sometimes be persuaded to let some of this slip into the right ear if it is worth it whether in coin, or protecting his family & holdings.
