Chamber of Evil
The team are confronted by a strange occurance in the local mine. A chamber near the previous occurance with the old altar hjas been found.
Plot points/Scenes
Grimmaz is made aware of an incident in the mine. The miners were working near the old altar thinking that it would be safe now with it blocked off and it cleared. Little do they know there will be an old Satanic temple discovered there, and possibly related to another group.
An inspection shows that there is a room blocked off from the mine of Roman design. It is much later than the previous altar and looks as if there are old paintings on the wall showing a demonic child, a Tiefling (similar in looks to Eleia), and similar motifs to the Book of Revelations. An altar lies at one end of the 15 ft, by 15 ft, by 30 ft chamber. It has a Latin style carving at the front of a 10 headed dragon with what looks like a Roman prostitute on it's back in the form of a Tiefling.
An inscription that is made through the whole chamber is: "Antichristus in hoc cubiculo procredat". (let the Antichrist come forward in this chamber)
Lying around the chamber is crumbling cloaks & clothing, and 9 skeletons. One is a Dragonborn behind the altar with a vicious looking silver knife in the form of a dragon tooth. One (a Tiefling female) is on the altar and looks as if it has been cut in the chest where the heart is. The rest appear in front of the altar and appear to be an even mix of men & women both Human & Tiefling.
A bunch of broken vials lie around, with a slight blueish tinge on the ground round them. They seemed to be poison. The chamber seems to have been blocked from the outside.
The miners refuse to enter saying that there is an inscription on the entrance that they don't trust. It says: Templum Adventus Filii Tenebrarum (temple of the coming son of darkness).
They also say that there are two miners that have recently arrived and initially took an interest in this part of the mine. Called Roberto and Govani, both from the middle of Italy, and keep themselves to themselves at all times. Both appear hard working, conversing regularly in Italian to one & another, but able to speak a rough form of Frankish. The former is a large burly man of at least 6 feet tall, broad & muscular, and with little hair. The latter is more slightly built and about 5 foot 7 inches with heavily receeding dark hair, a slight build and very nimble on his feet & with his hands.
Both are also described as having rosary beads in their belts and nobody has seen them take them or the crucifix out at any time. Since the finding of the chamber both disappear at night for a couple of hours and most thers seem to think that they have seen one or both enter the chamber. No proof of this is to be found though.
Also, they are not in the mine at the moment saying that they were seen heading towards Eschbach recently. Someone makes a remark they thought that they were heading to the town marketplace via the church & the messenger services in town.
If followed up, the monks, laypeople, and Father Tossil will all say neither appeared at the church or used its amenities incvluding library or healing service. Amon wasn't there either being away on pilgrimage to the west.
The messenger service doesn't like talking about the message they sent, with it marked down for their sister service in Rome, marked for an Abbess Annabella. If persuaded, such as with a few coins or equivalent, they will happily turn their backs while the message is read. I will say: We have found a chamber in the mines of Eschbach, and a possible female Tiefling matching the descriptions on the wal lives nearby.
Asking around the team will find that the Abbess Annabella isn't officially part of any nunnery that can be found there. Also, the two guys can be found eventually in the Eschbach Shields. There they can be followed, lifted by the Burgeaters, and / or questioned there.
The team will quickly find that they are heavily disguised with magic and disguise kits. Roberto will be revealed to be a Dragonborn, and Govani a Tiefling.
If pressed correctly (intimidation, deception, torture, and with magic), they will be revealed to be members of an underground cell following the Black / Anti Pope and their contact in Rome is Abbess AnnaBella who is a high ranking member of their cell.
Groups were sent out to try to find such chambers after finding that elements of the Roman Empire had followed such cults after the Empire turned to Christianity. Some had tried to use darker magic and rites to increase their power, othes used it to side with the Anti Pope disagreeing with the change in religion.
They are a doomsday cult believing that the Antichrist is to be born in the next few years and the chamber seems to point to this giving the date of the Antichrist's birth as VI.VI.DCCCII (6th June 802). They have a rough set of notes lifted at night from the old chamber they scribbled down concerning this from a diary by the leader of the cult. The old book was destroyed in the process.
The team has the options now as to what they want to do to trhe two of these, and the chamber. They will likely place a guard and keep a check on this site to prevent any others using it, and may want to back fill i to stop any others getting access.
