The Infiltrators

The team get to sort out a couple of infiltrators that have slipped into Eschbach. One is trying to disrupt the town, and another is trying to get to magic items.

Plot points/Scenes

The team are summoned by Reolus who has had information supplied by the Thieves of Frankia. The latter had stopped a small squad of the Bladed Pouch, who had been previously attacked by a couple of Baobhan Sith in the surrounding forest. It seems that there is a rebel Shadar-Kai agent in Eschbach who is looking to stir up the local population stating that the amount of non-humans, elves, dwarves etc is going to cause the town to be destroyed.

By asking around and slipping into the old ruins of a house in town, they may find the secret base of the Shadar-Kai. There is literature used to spread xenophobic ideas, and that the Baobhan Sith have an agent too looking to get at magic items, preferably from the church. The Baobhan Sith is pretty close to doing it under the disguise of a nun on pilgrimage staying on the church grounds.

The Shadar-Kai will make a move using a disguise to preach that those not human or humanoid enough are a scourge of God and should be killed or driven off. The team may want to counter this as they see fit, and try to arrest the Shadar-Kai. This may result in a fight concerning some of the locals & Shadar-Kai, and the team & the Burgeaters who try to restore order. There is a chance the Shadar-Kai will escape while a minor riot takes place.

As for the Baobhan Sith, she eventually manages to break into the vault below the church using magic and paralysing agents on Edward the Monk. He will raise the alarm as soon as he is able to, and not long after it (within the hour). There they will find that the guardian of the vault has been killed and the sound of rats is exactly that, with the remains of the majority of a swarm of rats. These may attack anything that gets close. They also carry St Justinian's Plague and a DC 13 Constitution saving throw is needed to be made to prevent infection. If someone is then then there is the risk that the person will also spread it causing them to sicken, taking 1d4+1 poison damage and a level of exhaustion per day unless stabilized or cured. They may also spread it to others. The effects also appear as the Bubonic Plague.

The Baobhan Sith will also use the riot and the problems with the Shadar-Kai to carry this out and escape up north. What she stole will be a Lament Configuration the church has recently came into contact with and took to stop it getting into the wrong hands. If it falls in the wrong hands it can be highly dangerous and it looks like she is going to be moving up to Aachen to get up to mischief there, or find a buyer.

The team will also find that the Baobhan Sith has been using minor magic by a Hag to disguise herself and escape. If they are fortunate themselves and act quickly they may still find her in the confines of Eschbach and it's territory. There they can fight her, arrest her, or do whatever is necessary.

Edward the Monk will be fine and say that Eschbach seems to be more dangerous than the previous places he served in southern Britain.

The team will be compensated with about 150 gold each, and/or supplies from the gold/silver/gem smith, or the Ludger forge totalling the same amount. If taken captive the Shadar-Kai will state that they are working with the Bladed Pouch and her orders come from the top of that organisation. The Baobhan Sith if taken alive will state that the Baobhan Sith Queen will have ordered this done at the bequest of Adalwolf.
