Keismeb Settlement in The Fruit of War | World Anvil

Keismeb (Case-MEHB)

Keismeb is the capital city of Unenshuut, in the northern half of the country between the eastern shore of the Tubisqu River and the western shore of Hooth's River. It is the largest settlement in Icalar by area and prior to the War of the Six, demographically as well. Its population pre-war (c. 985AC) was around 400,000 people, which dropped to around 365,000 people post-war by 1000AC. It argues itself as one of the oldest settlements in Icalar.   It was originally settled in approximately 420AC by nae'cthosai in and around the lee of the Dagger's Edge, a short cliff jutting out of the forest into the river, but was expanded when the nae'cthosai began to trade with the Gild Deepriver eova taking advantage of the mining opportunities in the nearby cave system. Although the Gild has since moved on, this cave system is now the site of Keismeb's underworld -- known by locals and frequenters as 'the Beneath' -- something that had particular relevance during the war when it sheltered warlocks.   The House of Keismeb (of the House of Leavings) was built into the cliffside of the Dagger's Edge; the Ega-Root there is unusual in that it is one of significant potency while also being so near the surface.   It is currently governed by a shifting, mixed oligarchy of representatives from prominent families, well-respected civil servants, and other individuals who otherwise have significant social influence (such as Gild leaders), and is known as the Keeping. Aguthsha Intoh was one such member. These disparate sources not only hosted the first gathering of the Violet Accord, but cobbled together their own private military forces and assisted in larger recruitment efforts to contribute to the Host of Selephise when it became obvious that the Accord would need to defend itself.

Points of interest

The Beneath
Both a literal and figurative underworld housed in the ancient cave systems of the original settlement. Slums and the black market, dens of river pirates and the font of rumor -- all exist here. Residents have names for each of the roughly-allocated 'quarters' of the cave system: Deepriver Heel (northernmost), Riverden (easternmost), Holdemarket (westernmost), and Southmines (southernmost).   In Holdemarket is Columnholde (from which the district derives its name), a huge column of the cave that has been hollowed-out in places for primarily residential use but has, in the past, seen some defensive use.   Notable taverns include The Tarred Saint and The Dapper Bachal. A popular bathhouse is Kihmelza’s Bathhouse, one of the oldest establishments in the Beneath itself.   Eastport
The city's main port on Hooth's River situated in front of and to either side of the cave system on which it was founded. As well as accepting river traffic from elsewhere and supporting the city's trade, it has a ferry system to the other side of the river.   The Varenver Courtyard
A quiet courtyard off which branch roads to the Vitane Family and Affenblau Family compounds.
