Kastis Settlement in The Fruit of War | World Anvil

Kastis (KAH-stiss)

Kastis was a small village in southern Unenshuut, west of the Sebat River, that once numbered around one hundred people. Like many southern settlements near water sources, one of its primary crops was wadaloush for export, but they were generally subsistence farmers.   It likely would have been of little concern until the locals grew suspicious of warlock activity in the area and the village itself in late 968AC. It began as strange activity, usually at night, then disturbances to the Ega, and progressed to livestock and then villagers going missing. Fearful, they scrounged what little money they had and used it to hire mercenaries -- Brinnlas Sousan and Unliore Jrei'ein -- to investigate. Brinnlas and Unliore managed to uncover a small group of warlocks using living things to practice summonings and other shadowwork; however, both villagers and Unliore were betrayed by Brinnlas and the warlocks unleashed a bout of vile magic that killed or subjugated the villagers and burned the village itself to cinders.   Since then, it has become one of the primary gathering spots outside of the Keismeb underground for warlock activity, and it was here in 969AC that -- under the leadership of Vasaeon Hejiq -- the successful summoning of Xa'aroch took place. Following this success and Xa'aroch's agreement to help, more and more experimentation and summonings would follow, and after the warlocks' absorption into the Host of Selephise of the Violet Accord, Kastis would be used as the primary base of operations for all Azgorach- and warlock-related activity during the War of the Six. It thus earned the nickname the Shadow's Door.
