Volarka Forest

Nestled in the southeast corner of the Nerrid Peninsula, between the Frungof Mountains and the Darsiac Ocean, this small forest of fir, birch, hemlock, and spruce is notable for the size of its trees and fauna. For those schooled in Nerridian will instantly recognize that the name of the forest means "miniature." (It actually means something more akin to a size that is more compatible with Nerrid sizing and therefore more objectively idealized and beautiful.) As part of some experiment nearly a millennia ago, a wizard laid a powerful enchantment on the area where everything within its boundaries miniaturizes by approximately half their size. Full grown pines reach heights of twenty feet tall at best but most barely top eight feet. Bears the size of dogs and wolves the size of housecats patrol beneath this lowered canopy, hunting deer that stand no more than a yard to the antler top.

Like all magical effects, this one has its limits. First, the power only effects creatures from the western shores of the Feathered River to the southern shores of the Pike River. This means that the fish in both rivers are full sized. That is of no consequence, however, as the effects also instant reverse if any creature The boundary along the Frungof Mountains and floodplains that lie between the forest and the Darsiac Ocean are less obvious. It is possible for creatures to unwittingly straddle this boundary, with one side growing to normal size while the other remains Volarkan. Lastly, and most unusually (although perhaps unexpectedly given the true context of the word volarka), Nerrid are unaffected by such changes. This means that the Nerrid visiting this forest find themselves in a world sized much more like a Human would find in the rest of Tarien. While this novelty is intriguing to most Nerrid, they have been known to find the effect off-putting. With their sense of scale changed, many claim that it makes them feel awkward and clumsy.
