Migrari

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
The Migrari were nomadic mixed-species spacefarers known for their effort to improve living standards across space. They were at their height during the early spacefaring age. The Migrari were often the first contact of a civilization, and traded their knowledge and technology for food and other supplies.   A lot of the art from the early spacefaring era was either made by the Migrari, or in their possession. Despite their love of beauty, the Migrari shunned the wealthy and deliberately made contact with the poorest. They were always trying to go where they could do the most good.   Their altruistic efforts across the system inspired the Hospitants.

Migrari Values and Beliefs

The Migrari devoted themselves to improving the living conditions of the System because of their deeply held values. Most famously, the Migrari believed in leaving a place better than they found it. Dignity and compassion was vital to them. Treating the wounds of the soul, the result of trauma and humiliation was as important to them as treating a bodily wound. They were extremely opposed to debts of any kind, which they considered another soul wound. They never accepted thanks or apologies, because they believed those were symbolic of a hierachy or inequality.   Health, hygiene, and sanitation was very important to the Migrari. First contact always carries the risk of disease. Anthropologists believe the Migrari stigma against the meat and products of livestock was the result of disease and plague contracted from livestock-reliant populations.
The Migrari would encourage their young to stay behind and make a new life with the civilisations they met. Sometimes people would join the Migrari, but life aboard the fleet was hard. The population slowly dwindled over the centuries as more Migrari settled. The Migrari no longer exist as they used to, but their legacy carries on.

Awww, what a lovely culture. I love that they dwindled organically instead of being wiped out, and that they have inspired others.

That's really sweet. What a nice legacy to carry on.

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .

Thank you, I'm looking forward to weave it in more and explore more of what things were like during this time.

Aw, if only everyone could be this nice to each other. It's a shame that they faded away.

May your worldbuilding hammer always fall true! Also, check out the world of the Skydwellers for lots of aerial adventures.

Good things don't need to last forever. I think it is nice to be glad that they were there, and that even when they are no longer around, they still inspire people.

Well, you're probably right. And it is nice to know that they're still a source of inspiration :)

This is a lovely culture. More people should be like the Migrari. I also hardly see cultures who have just dwindled and slowly integrated into other culture, instead of being wiped out. That probably influence quite many cultures for the better over time.

Thank you! Now that I think of it, I don't think I've seen it much in fiction either, but I think it happens pretty frequently in history
