Ion engines are a primitive form of space propulsion that works by generating ions and accelerating them to very high speeds using electric charge. They can provide a small amount of thrust but are outclassed by crystal engines in practically every use case.

Ion thrusters are very real and pretty cool! See this Wikipedia article. They're mostly used on small satellites and probes because, well, they really don't provide much thrust at all.
