Returned

The Returned are individuals who have died and been given power, wisdom, and skill in unlife, though they lose their memory through the process of this change.   There is always a represented Return for each of the native races of Nugelasau. The current returned are the following.   While they cannot use magic, they are seen as the most powerful divine beings in Nugelasau aside from Shone Volar themselves. They are said to have a single divinely powered Birthright Spirit that has thrust them to the 7th heightening. A returned can willingly give up their powerful Birthright Spirit to purify and repair a single person, though doing this would kill the Returned, and as such it is not often that a Returned elects to do this.
Each returned consumes one Birthright Spirit per week as a consequence of being reborn. If they consume their divine Birthright Spirit, then they will die.

Requirements

Being a person who has a necromantic Birthright Spirit, and who died in Nugelasau, though returned and was not undead.

Appointment

Shonites believe that a being who has passed the gate between life and death and returned of their own will is granted a glimpse of the true realm of the Gods. In this realm, they believe that the soul of the Returned is changed and given knowledge and skill similar to that of each of the Eight: strength from Zagnaraz, beauty from Tishka, prophecy from Gribanati, health from Aris Teo, and cunning from Smajreki. It is then the mixture of of a new form granted by Daulesa, and the pull to the mortal plane of Agni Skan that allows them this new form. And Shone Volar is believed to be the one to directly oversee this process.

Duties

To oversee the government in Nugelasau, and to act as one of the voices of Shone Volar.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

When another individual of the same race dies and becomes a Returned, then the current returned will die in exactly 7 days, even if they have an excess of Birthright Spirits stored within.  As a result, during these 7 days is when a Returned is most likely to give up their Divine Birthright Spirit in order to heal an individual.

Cultural Significance

In order to keep a Returned alive, many followers of Shonism decide to willingly volunteer their Birthright Spirits. Even people without a necromantic Birthright Spirit may volunteer to give theirs away to the Returned, though followers of other religions often see this as an abomination. In exchange for the sacrifice, the individual is given compensation, typically around 5,000 platinum pieces.
The Returned are also expected to perform auguries by reviewing works of art sent by citizens, and their priests record their dreams, words, and acts at all times to search for prophetic glimpses.
