This article is to introduce each of my World Anvil Summer Camp 2021 articles properly, now I've completed the challenge!
My first Summer Camp has been amazing. I've accomplished so much more than I expected of myself, and most of my prompt responses led me to delve into parts of Relativity I hadn't explored much yet or even hadn't thought about at all, and I made several non-prompt articles public in the process. Despite declaring in my
pledge document that I would make Relativity public only for the challenge, I see no reason not to keep it public! I've had some very thought-provoking feedback from the community on some of them, which is an excellent reason to keep working this way!
If you haven't already, now is a good time to check out
my welcome article to get an overview of Relativity before diving into the details!
Summer Camp Articles
I launched into these three medical prompts at the beginning of Summer Camp with one of my key events, a supervolcano eruption on the planet Azpal, in mind:
Fort Hospital 11, the most famous hospital built specifically for surviving the eruption
Lung Filters, a technology created in the aftermath
Farmer's Lung, a condition prevalent following the eruption which they were used to treat
The prompts "a species of working animal" and "an extraordinary writing tool" came together in my head for these:
Valke, a small cephalopod used as a living writing tool by the ocean-dwelling Oaschi people
Now for the "inhospitable region" prompts ...
Crystal Fields, a beautiful and inhospitable region on Azpal
Palonem, the people who live there
I have my mum to thank for those, as she started throwing out ideas when I told her about the inhospitable region prompt, and one led to the Crystal Fields. Which also led to lots of ideas I haven't written yet regarding Azpal's post-apocalyptic era.
Black Falls Cavern, an important location in sphinx mythology
The Wolf Spirit, a sphinx myth with lots of teasers hidden in it ...
I always have fun writing mythology, but one of the reasons I enjoyed the sphinx mythology so much is because it has roots in some of my planned stories. (We are, after all, talking about time travel!)
First Words Ceremony, a celebration of a siren child's learning to control their voice
Lyra's Confession, a social media announcement with huge implications for Zartriite equal rights
I linked the criminal character with the "unit/squad who guards an important person", which gave me an opportunity to explore the public's reactions to
zombies from another angle, and I also came up with the organisation
Gray Eye, which the unit belongs to:
Brandan Argent, a very corrupt businessman who evaded the justice system
Which brings me to my next article ...
Mark Bourne, a fake supervillain turned zombie rights activist
Rohesia Mason, an ogre who just wants to find love
Mark and Rohesia were both characters I'd had in mind already to play important roles in future stories. In both cases, I had neither named them or done much work on their personalities or backgrounds. Rohesia's article is my longest for SC as I mapped out her entire love life in it, not wanting to stop partway through!
Kiln Figures, labourers made from clay
Biaphomor, where Kiln Figures are manufactured
I slightly misunderstood the "vital trade resource that supports a settlement or region" prompt, but I don't regret it, because I really like the Kiln Figures (inspired by the golem myths). Not sure what I might do with them in terms of use in stories, but thinking about it.
Celene's Staff, a powerful weapon that mysteriously vanished with its owner
Order of the Holy Head, an order of banshee who guard an immortal dullahan's lost head
The staff and order articles led to the creation of new characters and new plots!
Tempus House, headquarters of the Victorian division of the Guild of Time Displaced
Zartri Life, an at times controversial retail company who sell products to Zartriites
Pimelok, a three-headed creature that lives on an icy moon
Inggerai, who celebrate it
Aquatopia, a floating resort city
I'll be honest; the "settlement known as a pleasure town or for louche behaviour" was definitely not my favourite prompt, and I dreaded it. However it did get me thinking about population management in the future, and gave me a location for one of my future stories.
