Lovussle Language in Relativity | World Anvil

Lovussle

Lovussle is the language of the loviou, sapient trees native to the planet Azpal. The intricate language is composed of movement, sound produced by movement, and colours. For instance, the combination of two branches crossing, the tint of their leaves, and a pattern of creaks in their bark, make up a word or phrase.   The language has been studied by Alpazoi linguists since loviou were discovered to be sapient, but despite building up a huge database with their observations and analysis, much of it remains a mystery. One of the hypotheses is that the language is one of the few in the known universe which is innate rather than acquired, as little variation has been found in its use between loviou groups that--as far as anyone can tell--have never had contact with each other. Since loviou are unable to travel beyond their roots, it is plausible that the language did not travel either; but more knowledge of the loviou themselves would be required to make a conclusion.   The largest amount of data collected about Lovussle--and loviou in general--comes from the dedicated linguist and anthropologist Friolar Anke, who famously spent 43 years living among the largest colony of loviou on Azpal. He created a holographic lovu and spent hours every day, initially mimicking their communication, and eventually engaging directly with them. By the time he published his study, his mental health was declining, and most of his work was initially dismissed. Since his death, other linguists have verified many of his findings, though some of his more outrageous claims are still considered erroneous.

Dialects

Since the loviou have been exported to other planets, most notably with the creation of the dryads on Earth, variations of Lovussle have emerged with changes to loviou DNA. Opinion differs whether dryad dialects of Lovussle have a verbal component, or whether they communicate in two separate languages.
