Farmer's Lung

Farmer's Lung is a condition affecting Alpazoi caused by over-exposure to volcanic fumes on their planet Azpal. It is so named because it most commonly affects volcano farmers.
In the nation Djor-Roa, particularly among the Koradjo, lung problems are the worst-feared medical conditions. Farmer's Lung is among the most dangerous, and was one of the most rare until the Djoro eruption, at which point it became widespread throughout the country and even further afield. It was also, until that time, almost impossible to treat.
In the aftermath of the eruption, Meddine Burro designed lung filters, a type of cyborg technology which is placed inside affected lungs. It was the first non-drug treatment targeted specifically at the condition, and after development proved very effective at reducing symptoms and increasing longevity of lifespan in the afflicted.

Causes

Volcanoes on Azpal occasionally give off toxic fumes. Volcano farmers, seismologists and those of other occupations that require venturing inside a volcano, have instruments to predict when the fumes are expected to be released. However, they are not always accurate. Exposure over a long period of time can cause Farmer's Lung.

Symptoms

Chronic Exposure

The main symptoms are a chronic cough and getting out of breath easily, both of which increase in severity over time. Pain and coughing up blood follow months later, at which point the condition is severe enough to reduce effectiveness of drug treatment.

Acute Exposure

All the above symptoms present either immediately or within hours of first inhalation.
