Zombie Species in Relativity | World Anvil

Zombie

While classified as Zartriites, zombies vary from the Solar Triad's other creations in a couple of ways. While the other species in that category were intentionally genetically engineered, the zombies were an accidental creation. Zombieism is a viral contagion which results in mutated humans. The other Zartriites were grown from assorted DNA, resulting in entirely new beings, whereas the zombies began life as humans. Zombies are also the only Zartriites who were not settled in the Bronze Age.   While vampirism and lycanthropy can also spread to humans, it is a rare occurrence that can only happen through a deliberate act. Zombieism, on the other hand, is an infection that spreads rapidly through the population.

History

The Solar Triad's experiments in 2066 caused a plague which spread throughout London. Those infected developed symptoms that include erratic, aggressive and animalistic behaviour; loss of verbal coherency; enhanced strength and sense of smell; alongside changes to physical appearance including pale grey eyes and pockmarked skin.   The contagion was spread through skin contact, and had infected a tenth of the city's population by the time all were successfully quarantined. The condition proved to be temporary in some, but a twentieth of the population were permanently affected. Those who had had prolonged skin-to-skin contact, or for whom the infection had entered their body through the bloodstream, made up the latter category.   When the decision was made to take the other Zartriites back in time, zombies were left behind, under scientific observation. The contagion was contained, but study was needed to find a way to save the zombies. Eventually a vaccine was created, and later came a cure. While the cure did not return the zombies to human, it did allow them to resume relatively normal lives, with no danger to the public.
