Gorgon Hairdresser

Once a gorgon reaches adolescence, their hair requires regular "trimming" to keep it from becoming venomous. Gorgon hairdressing is a very difficult and potentially risky job which requires at least a year of training. There are different methods of trimming gorgon hair--cutting off the snake heads completely, which many gorgons (particularly teenage ones) favour, or by individually removing the fangs.   Removing the fangs only requires much more vigorous training, and is more expensive. The pros are that removed fangs take longer to grow back than entire heads; the hair keeps growing in the interim, which cutting off the snake heads prevents; and allowing the hair to continue growing opens up much more styling options. A gorgon hairstyler is a gorgon hairdresser who is trained to not just perform anti-venom hair maintenance, but actually style gorgon hair in a way that the client desires.   In Zartri Valley, gorgons are legally required to have their hair cut, to keep it from becoming venomous. In 2070, the same law was introduced in Britain, and many other countries on Earth where gorgons were known to reside followed suit. While cases of gorgon hair actually poisoning anyone is very rare, the laws were introduced to protect not just anyone a gorgon may subconsciously want to hurt, but the gorgon themselves. In Zartri Valley the law was called Perdita's Law, after the tragic "accidental suicide" of a teenager struggling with depression.   As a profession, gorgon hairdresser is often undervalued. Most people don't recognise the amount of work that goes into even a simple trim. When wounded or confused, individual hair strands often try to attack each other, and both client and hairdresser can get badly hurt if the proper procedure is not carried out. Should a strand be successfully bitten by another, it withers, leaving the client ill and physically scarred at the root. Eventually a new strand grows, replacing the old one, but this takes weeks and the client suffers symptoms in the meantime.   The hairdresser has to inject both themselves and client with an antidote prior to beginning, which prevents fatalities but not injuries, or illness as a result of being bitten. The hair then has to be sedated, which is a highly complicated procedure in itself. The client themselves cannot be sedated, as this would interfere with the antidote, and even sedated hair is never fully asleep. The strands have to be separated out so they cannot reach each other or the client's exposed skin, and then the actual cutting begins. If a simple cut, each stump has to be cauterised immediately to prevent immediate regrowth. A simple cut lasts 6-8 months, depending on the client.

Wow, this is so imaginative and detailed! I love the concept and it's so amusing (and kinda scary) to think of having to style a gorgon's hair.
