Derakil

Derakil is a commune of foresters in Qosid at the eastern edge of the Old Forest, focused on growing and cutting trees. They deliver wood to Thellur and downstream areas. Derakil is a self-sufficient commune, known for its conservative, traditional values and its devotion to proper stewardship of the forest.

Demographics

Derakil consists of solely wood elves, with male and females in equal number. All of those able to work, to some extent work as a lumberjack or sawer. In addition, some wood elves hunt, forage and cook food to support the community, or provide medical support. The only exception to the rule that "all must saw" are the clergy, but the size of this class is regulated to be one-twentieth of the total population.
Derakil is not open to other species, including high elves or stout elves. That is not say they do not offer hospitality to travelers, it is simply their creed that the spiritual requirements for Derakili can solely be met by wood elves and that any others can be merely guests in the commune.

Government

The commune is subdivided into families, with about 20 wood elves per family. The oldest woman in each family is eligible to become the Overseer of the commune, and a vote is cast every decade to decide who gets to play this role. The Overseer convenes with the other female family elders to run the commune on a day-to-day basis and each member of this Circle of Elders has the discretionary power to call for a communal assembly, which is open to all members, regardless of age, gender or role.
If an Overseer is inconvenienced for any reason, sortition among the remaining Circle of Elders decides who will take over the role until the end of its term. It is not possible for anyone to be both Overseer and Representative, and the latter is always chosen by the Circle of Elders.
Despite a relatively authoritarian setup, Derakil is committed to the democratic culture found across Qosid. Strong cultural norms keep the Overseers and the Circle members in check, despite the limited popular control over their decision-making.

Defences

Derakili are excellent hunters and spend considerable time honing their combat skills. Especially the men are trained to be great archers, with many of them having spent time in Straliaced to learn how to use and care for their bows.

Industry & Trade

Logs from Derakil are shipped to Thellur and Oltumur. In Thellur, the saw mill in the Bridge District turns the logs into wood, but high quality wood is often taken care of within Derakil itself, too. Such wood is shared with Straliaced in the Eastern Forest, where bowyers craft excellent weaponry.

Infrastructure

The different families in Derakil arrange for their own housing, following the instructions to keep the forest environment pure to the largest extent possible. Many of them live in houses built in trees, some of them rising above the canopy. For transport of logs, a few sand roads exist that enable the use of carts to carry the material to Thellur and the river.
