Session 29 Report

General Summary

Moren 1 Snowdeep 834EA

The next morning, Pōtiki, Harthe and Jodariel Balakin awoke to a message in their ears from Glynna Willowbank asking them where they were and telling them that she had found some useful information with some help but that it would be best to speak in person. They let her know that they were heading to Rouvray that day. She told them she would meet them there and tells them to meet her at The Stone Ox.   They all head downstairs for breakfast and relay the information to Selestine Ignasia and explain to her who Glynna is after she is confused about how and why they have a voice in their head, and how she has been helping them with information. Pō asked Harthe where they could buy a diamond for a spell. Harthe told them about how he vaguely remembered a jewellery shop called 'The Pristine Trinket' but he recalled that it was also wildly overpriced as most stores in Nuvar are because of the hold that the Nuvar Merchants' Guild has on trade in the city. They finished their breakfast and decided to head to the the jeweler's shop on their way out of town.   It took a little bit to find the shop due to Harthe's foggy memory, but they eventually found the shop but noted it was called The Darling Trinket not The Pristine Trinket. They entered the shop and Pō looked for diamonds but found most were below the value they were looking for but wildly overpriced. Pō gave up and was rude to the shopkeeper, Nelgrek Sumnargh. While the two were distracted, Selestine swiftly swiped a pair of emerald earrings (worth 200gp but marked for sale at much more than that) and a ruby necklace (worth 50gp but also marked for sale at a much higher price). Pō then bought a hooded cloak and a scarf.   The party head out of Nuvar and onto the main road to Rouvray. The road was well traveled and several carts and people crossed their paths as they went. Pō reminded them about the need to use disguises or keep hidden and put their hood and scarf on. As they passed through Tradehollow, Harthe and Selestine could hear two women arguing about a block away. It drew their attention though there were other noises and voices around, though Jodi and Pō did not seem to notice or hear. The two listened as they were getting closer and they heard more information with one woman arguing that she needed to get back to Nuvar but she wasn't leaving the other woman behind and that she couldn't keep living how she was. Selestine started to wander off toward the voices and the others followed. They found two elven women, one looking very down on their luck, they looked like sisters. The older woman looked embarrassed and apologised to the onlookers and started to usher her sister inside. Pō asked if they were ok. The younger woman told them to mind their own business. The older woman chided her sister and explained she had to get home to Nuvar to her responsibilities but she couldn't leave her sister to live in squalor but she was being stubborn. Harthe asked the younger sister why she wanted to stay there. She explained that she didn't want to go back to the orphanage and that Tuwar Braydon was a dick. The party unanimously agreed with her. The older woman introduced herself as Meira Caizeiros and her sister Majorie Caizeiros. Upon further discussion the party found out that Majorie was being evicted from her hovel and had turned to begging and prostitution to support herself but Meira said that her sister's pimp was abusive. Harthe told her she could go with them to Rouvray. They both said that she would not be able to afford to live there so Pō gave her 200gp to help set her up. The sister's thanked them profusely and upon being informed that she had inadvertently locked several children up in the sewers and that Tuwar was neglecting the children in the orphanage, Meira rushed back to Nuvar and Majorie joined the party toward Rouvray. Harthe told Majorie to distribute the money around so that it wasn't all in one place.   As they headed out of town, Selestine told Pō they must be absolutely crazy giving that kind of money away to one person. Pō asked Selestine what a pimp was. Jodi overheard and said it was usually a rude man. Selestine said it was probably better they didn't know. They reached another fork in the road and found a sign pointing the wrong way so they fixed it to match the map they were following. As they journeyed closer to Rouvray, they noticed several plumes of smoke from multiple sources in the direction of the city. Pō speculated that it could be the dragon they thought they saw several days ago. They stopped a man and asked why they city was on fire. The man told them they were celebrating. They asked what they were celebrating. He told them it was the annual Barstool Burning. They asked for more information and he looked a bit annoyed as he was on his way somewhere, but he told them about how years ago a man got his butt bitten off when he sat on a barstool that turned out to be a monster, so every year everyone burns all the barstools and get very drunk in commemoration. They thanked him for his time and Jodi asked if he'd like to join them and the prostitute they had with them. He confusedly said no as he was going the other way.   Pō asked Majorie about her skills so that she could do something in Rouvray so that she would not need a pimp. She told them about how she used to look after the children in the orphanage with her sister. They suggested that she could be a housekeeper in Rouvray as they get paid. Selestine told her that if she wants to get off the streets, she needs to know how to fight and then find people to pay her to fight. Selestine threw her rapier toward her to catch, but the woman was so shocked and didn't catch it and the hilt clobbered her in the face. Selestine apologised and Harthe thwapped her with his stick telling her you don't just throw weapons at people and expect them to know what to do or how to use it. Jodi told him that's how she learnt. Selestine agreed it worked for some people.   The party arrived in the outskirts of the city, predominantly farmland. Noting that they were approaching civilisation, Pō told Majorie to go on ahead without them and stepped off the road and cast disguise self and disguised themself as an old human woman. They got back on the road and became aware of a small group of bandits behind a barn off the road. Pō disguised themselves as an old human woman. After walking a bit further along the road, Harthe and Selestine overheard voices from behind a barn just off the road saying that the group couldn't be them as there's only a white tiefling, and that they needed to stay on task and figure out how to get to the prison. Harthe told the others what he heard. Harthe said he wanted to go talk to them. Pō told him to friendly ask if they're evil. They suggested Harthe and Selestine go ahead and be sneaky and then give them a sign if they're evil and they will shoot from behind. Pō loudly told the group as an old woman "OH DEAR I NEED A LITTLE BREAK!" Harthe sent Pip to fly up and hide up on the roof of the barn to listen in on the conversation. Harthe used Pip's ears to listen and heard the group arguing, He heard 3 voices. They were arguing among themselves about whether or not to intercept the group to ask the white tiefling where the others were because they keep killing their other bands. Harthe told them what they heard and they discussed whether or not to go confront them or carry on as if they hadn't noticed. They decided the best approach would be to sneak up on them and tie them up and interrogate them. Harthe activated his winged boots. Pō and Selestine noticed that one of the bandits was still watching around the corner, so Pō continued to act like an old lady and Harthe, still disguised as Gorn proclaimed that they heard voices from the barn and that they should go ask for food. Harthe then pretended to go take a piss around the corner and flew up onto the roof. The rest of the group headed straight for the bandits. The man that was watching from around the corner told them they must be a bit lost. Jodi hit him with her shield and sent him back.   A short fight ensued with most dying pretty quickly with Pō in particular overshooting their attack killing them instantly rather than leaving them alive to interrogate. They threaten the others to lay down their arms or they'll kill them. Pō harvests one soul and Selestine collects a soul trinket from the other as a tiny violin. They leave only one alive, but knocked out by Jodi. They dragged all the bodies into the barn. Selestine asked if that's how encounters normally go with them and commented that no wonder people were after them. They woke up the remaining living bandit, and interrogated him. He told them that they were mercenaries hired to try infiltrate the prison. He refuses to tell them why so Selestine breaks the violin soul trinket and asks the female orc bandit captain inside why they were trying to infiltrate the prison. The captain told her they were asked to break out and capture a man called Willie Wiley. The soul then started to disperse and was harvested by Pō. They interrogated the remaining bandit further but he didn't know why they were trying to capture Wiley and that he was just following orders. They asked where the orders came from. He told them the orders came from the Shadow duke and they worked for him because he paid well. Eventually they just killed him and set up a tableau to give the appearance that the group killed each other and planted gold on one of them so that it looked like one of them tried to rob the others. Selestine picked their pockets and gathered 20gp from each of the four bandits, as well as a piece of paper from the captain with a list of options for getting past the Rouvray guards to get to the Rouvray Prison with several of the options crossed out, seemingly ineffective. They then left the barn and headed back along the road to Rouvray, with a message from Glynna asking where they were hurrying them along.   As they ventured closer to the city, farmland made way to scattered and erratic homesteads to denser housing. Looking to the right, they could just make out the outline of a mountain range far in the north past the harbour. While the housing looked simple and low quality to be considered a poorer area, they could see that there was a degree of comfortable living and making do. Guards wandered the streets in practical uniforms bearing the Cleroy symbol but rather than appearing to enforce rule, they looked to be helping the citizens. As they neared the outer gates of the city, the smell of smoke wafted towards them and one of the pillars of smoke looked closer. The small community outside the wall stretched right up to the wall. A large blindingly white stone wall that ran right up to the edge of the cliff to the right and curved around on the left. Round guard towers were dotted along the wall with strikingly blue conical roofs. Guards patrolled the upper battlements, each garbed in leather armour with a tabbard bearing the Cleroy flag and emblem. Three guards stood either side of the city gate, collecting people's names and descriptions. A gnome man had a metal picture frame with runic inscriptions on it that glowed as he held it up in front of each person for a couple of seconds before they were given a piece of parchment and allowed into the city. When it was their turn, the Venturers were polite but Harthe was still disguised as Gorn and gave the name Gorn, Jodi gave her name as Jodi, hoping that it was different enough from her full name that no one would make the connection. They each got a piece of parchment permitting them into the city and were told to keep it with them at all times.   They entered the outer gates and stepped toward the inner wall of the city. A bustling plaza lay ahead of them with the castle towering over the rest of the city far beyond. The city was a stark white, the ground and walls filling in the surroundings in white, save for the fresh greenery of potted trees lining the streets, and the rooftops of various shades of blue. As they reached the other plaza, they finally saw the source of one of the pillars of smoke. A large bonfire in the middle of the plaza burning a large pile of barstools and wooden chairs. People of various stages of drunkenness hollered and cheered around the bonfire. They continued along and after passing through the inner gate, they asked someone for directions to The Stone Ox. The man told them to continue along Azure Lane and over the river to Westmarket and the inn was next to the market square there. They thanked him and followed the directions, finally arriving at The Stone Ox at sundown, another bonfire in the market square outside.   They entered The Stone Ox Inn and was greeted by Glynna at one of the tables standing next to it as there were no barstools. She waved at the innkeep, Kenya Illi'var and beckoned them all to her room, which opened out into her mansion. She introduced herself to Selestine and Selestine noted that she must be the voice in everyone's head. Glynna smiled and offered her a communication pebble as well. Selestine thanked her and put it in her pocket as she was mildly distrustful. Glynna told them all about the books she had found in Beboloba. She started to tell them about the information she'd discovered about the artifacts but Pō stopped her, telling her that they had noticed that they were periodically being scryed on. Glynna looked around to check but could not detect any scrying. Assured they were safe, she continued, telling them that there were actually only eight artifacts, and they were each tied to a school of magic. She believed the legends indicated there were more than than in order to throw people off trying to collect them or discovering their capability. She told them that using a spell from the respective school of magic activates the artifact. She then told them that she wasn't sure yet where the ritual site was but if the artifacts were taken there and activated, they could destroy the divine gate. She told them she thinks that with more research she can figure out how to reverse engineer it to reinforce the divine gate and destroy the artifacts but it may mean that the gods are cut off completely from this world. Pō said that would be bad and Glynna agreed but it was the lesser of two evils. She hoped that with more research she can figure out a way to avoid that too.   She also told them that there was allusions to things described like the artifacts which also have certain abilities that they could use to help them. Harthe pulled out the one they got from Vanimaldine and she analysed it and discovered that it was a conjuration school artifact. Harthe cast a conjuration spell on it and there was a buzz and various elemental effects started to happen but fizzled out quickly. Glynna suggested that maybe he needed to have a higher spell in mind to create the effect he wanted. She tested out one of her own and ascertained that it could work as an arcane focus and amplifier, allowing for casting a spell up to three levels higher of the same school of magic. With further study and attempts, she estimated that it could probably only be used in such a way successfully only once for at least 24 hours, or maybe even longer than that as it's such a powerful artifact. She also told Harthe that she had found a scroll of teleportation circle in the library and gave it to him.   She then asked why they were in Rouvray and they told her that they wanted to go find Harthe's mentor in Rouvray Prison and that they thought he might be there under orders from the Shadow Duke. Glynna told them that she could get them to the prison. Harthe asked if she knew Wiley. She said his name didn't ring a bell but maybe. He told her he uses a few different names so maybe she knows him by another name. Glynna then led the party to the outside of the Rouvray City Hall. She told them to wait and went inside, returning with a key. She led them then to a door around the back of the building and unlocked it, greeting the guards inside who greeted her in kind and locked the door behind them all. They all ventured down the spiral stairs deep underground and eventually found themselves at the bottom and greeted two more guards either side of a heavy metal door. The guard greeted Glynna and let the group in. They found themselves in a large hallway with barred cells each side. They could hear a man and woman yelling at each other very loudly across the aisle at each other. Harthe recognised the man's voice as Wiley. As they got closer, the woman looked toward them and saw Pōtiki and pointed at her and yelled "You! You killed Feyrith!"
