Session 27 Report

General Summary

Dorent 30 Frostwind 834EA

Theodelinda Whitfoot directed Pōtiki and Jodariel Balakin toward the Nuvar Orphanage at the end of the street.   Harthe and Selestine Ignasia meanwhile had stepped out of Korang's shop, The Elixirium in Upper Market and Harthe spotted across the way, a building that he recognised used to be the bookshop owned by his mentor. They went to look and saw it was now named The Rude Spittoon. Harthe wanted to go in but saw that it was shut and would not be open until the evening. He looked through the window and saw that it was now a nightclub and told Selestine about how he used to know the place and that it used to be a bookshop.  He said that he would like to return later when it was open again if they had time.   Harthe then used his communication pebble to contact Pō and Jodi and tell them he and Selestine had got the information they needed to find the goblins. Pō told him they were heading to the orphanage to find Duncan Whitfoot and where to find them. He got a bit lost on the way with the city layout having changed a bit since he had last been there, but eventually found them outside the gates of the orphanage. Upon Selestine's arrival back with the group, Pōtiki suddenly had an uncomfortable feeling about a presence surrounding Selestine and within her bag and began to keep their distance and a sense of distrust.   Within the gates of the orphanage they could see a large neglected brick building with children running around laughing and screaming outside, with a harried half-orc woman sat on the stoop reading a book with a cigarette in hand and a large glass of liquor next to her. Outside the fence, the party spotted three children not so well hidden among some shrubbery next to an obvious hole under the fence. Selestine kept her eye on the woman on the stoop and felt very uncomfortable.   Harthe, still disguised as the old man he called Gorn, approached the small group of children 'hiding'. and Jodi joined him. The group was made up of a half-elf boy (Gregor Grefiel), a hill dwarf boy (Grukdran Greytank) and a young human girl (Isobel Barnes). Harthe told them about how he was Duncan's grandfather and was here to visit and couldn't find him. The children were surprised at first as they thought they were hidden. They told Harthe and Jodi that they thought he had gone home as a few of the neighbourhood kids come visit and play with the orphanage children and then go home and sometimes they don't come back for a while if they get into trouble with their parents. After a bit of back and forth, it was revealed that the children had been playing behind the orphanage a long time ago and had discovered an access point to the city's sewer network underground. They would play there sometimes to get away from Tuwar Braydon when she was in a rage. Some of the children had been playing down there one day and they'd heard voices down there calling to them. Duncan and two other kids went to investigate but the others were too scared and went back up to the orphanage. They hadn't seen Duncan or the others come back but had assumed they'd gone home and got into trouble with their parents. They said that the next day Meira Caizeiros had found the access point and locked it up and said it was because it was too dangerous. Harthe asked if they knew of any other ways to get into the sewers but they didn't. They told him they might be allowed to use the access point because they were grown ups. Harthe and Jodi thanked them and returned to Pō and Selestine.   The party discussed tactics. Harthe suggested they tell Tuwar that they were there from the council to inspect a leak coming from under the orphanage. They decided they probably did not look enough like they could be from the council to be convincing. They decided Harthe should just rely on his charm. They entered the gates and approached Tuwar, with Pōtiki hanging back slightly from the group. Tuwar turned out to be surly and unhelpful, but she told them there's probably a key in the office. Jodi was angry with Tuwar telling her adamantly 'WE WANT TO UNSTICK THE CHILDREN'. Tuwar waved them off saying she just wanted to read her book.   They entered the building and up the stairs. Selestine told them she hated orphanages and this one was particularly horrible. Pōtiki agreed that this orphanage looked like a pile of shit. They found the main office but it was locked. Selestine knocked but no one answered. Selestine offered to unlock the door but they decided it was better to just pick the sewers lock. They went outside again and wandered around and noticed that Isobel had been watching them. She ducked under the fence again and ran to the corner of the building out of sight of Tuwar and waved them over. She asked them if they were going to find and help Duncan and asked if they needed her to show her where the access to the sewers were. They thanked her and said yes. She ran off and eventually realised she'd left them behind so came back. Harthe told her he was an old man and couldn't go as fast as her, saying 'the older I get the better I was'. Jodi puzzled over this phrase but eventually shrugged it off.   They arrived at the trap door and it was chained and padlocked up. They thanked Isobel and she wished them luck and ran back to her friends. Selestine knelt down and pulled out her thieves' tools to set about unlocking the padlock. She fidgeted for a moment and muttered to herself 'shut up you're not helping', sounding like she was talking to someone but there was no one else there. Harthe, Pō and Jodi all overheard and Pō was alarmed but didn't say anything. Harthe and Jodi were simply confused. In her distraction, Selestine fudged the lockpicking and the pick broke in her hand. Fortunately it had broken in the end of it and not damaged the lock. She attempted again with a new lockpick and this time was successful.   They opened the trap door and climbed down the ladder into the sewers and were greeting with the unpleasant smell of sewage. Selestine comment that she didn't expect to be walking through orphan shit that day. Harthe replied that it wasn't just orphan shit down there. Pō asked if everyone could see as there was no source of light down there. Selestine said she couldn't see a thing, so Pō passed her a pair of googles of night from their bag so that she could see too. Harthe gave out the potions of greater healing he'd bought at The Elixirium.   Pō ran a quick vibe check but could not sense anything further. As they ventured further down the corridor, they heard the sound of squeaking, as a giant rat rounded the corner toward them. There were several swarms of rats and giant rats they fought and killed as they progressed.   Eventually they rounded a corner and entered a large room and were faced by three green and haggard old men covered in warts and boils. Their ugly smiles with missing teeth filled them with dread. Three children were huddled in the corner.
