Session 28 Report

General Summary

Dorent 30 Frostwind 834EA

The Venturers scoped out the place and Pōtiki ran out and told the children they were there to rescue them. The haggard cronies attacked Pō and then Harthe, Jodariel Balakin and Selestine Ignasia also joined the fray. Pō came close to death at one point and Harthe got frustrated as one of the cronies counterspelled his spell. One of the cronies had bogeys coming out of his nose, another had exceptionally greasy hair, and the last one had his toes sticking out of his shoes. Pō moved up close into melee range and used their Kuzmjir's Judge sickle and as they summoned it, they were hit with a flashback to the dream they had had a night or two previous and an overwhelming sensation overtook them and they realised they could feel the emotion of love and care. While this shook them momentarily, they continued to fight. As the first two hags died, Pō harvested their souls, but Selestine landed the killing blow of the final cronie and as the arrow skewered its jugular, she held out her hand and a white light comes out of its body and condenses into a rat's skull trinket into her hand. She quickly slipped it into her cloak pocket. Pō turned around and saw this happen and was shocked and asked 'what the fuck was that?'. Selestine showed Pō the trinket and said it was just a thing she could do and that it could come in handy at times. She tried to distract by suggesting they check on the children.   Jodi went to the three children and checked if they were ok. She asked if any of them was Duncan Whitfoot and a halfling boy raised his hand. She noticed that he was sniffling and looked unwell so she cast lay on hands on him to remove the disease he'd picked up from the diseased rats in the sewers. The other children were a wood elf boy called Thomas Raddiford and a human girl called Ayenna Nalor. Jodi then used her divine sense ability to detect undead in case the children were not themselves, she saw that the children were fine but that there was a vague aura emanating from within Selestine's cloak, bag and near her shoulder.   Selestine meanwhile recovered her fired arrows and she and Harthe started to loot the bodies of the fallen hags. They found 160 silver pieces and 12 gold pieces. When they were finished Pō questioned her further, asking about how her trinket was useful and if that was something she was able to do or if it just does that. Selestine told her she didn't choose what the trinket turns out to be but that she did call the spirit to her and it manifested as a rat skull. Jodi told them they would have to be careful because they both eat dead things and that they would have to take turns. Selestine clarified that while she eats dead things like meat, she doesn't consume souls and expressed confusion why everyone was so concerned, noting that the hag was a bad guy. Pō said that all souls needed to be returned to where they belong eventually. Selestine told them that it will be after it's been of use to her. Harthe laughed. Pō asked how she learnt to do that. Selestine pretended she didn't hear and started to clean her arrows. Pō side-eyed but dropped the matter. They banished their sickle to see if the effect that had come over them during the fight disappeared and found that the emotion and capacity for the emotion was still present, before they had the chance to process this, Selestine asked Pō about their soul harvesting power but Pō told her he didn't know her very well so won't tell her anything about it yet and unconvincingly said it was "for good and justice and something". Selestine turned away and rolled her eyes. Harthe chuckled.   Jodi pulled out a rope and passed it to each of the children and told them to hold onto it so no one gets lost on their way back to the surface, and asked the others if they were ready to go now. Harthe said he was. Selestine raised the point that there might be other kids still down there but the children said they hadn't seen or heard any. Selestine asked what the cronies did to them and why they kept them there. They told her they tricked them by pretending to be friends of theirs and/or their parents and then made them their servants getting them food and doing their bidding. Selestine asked if there were any more of them but they didn't think so. Jodi suggested they do a roam when they get back to the top and if they thought anyone was missing that should be there, she, Selestine, Pō and Harthe would go back down and look for them. She told them that the children should stay up there though if they do. The children asked the others their names and the group introduced themselves.   Jodi asked if Selestine could come to the front of the rope chain with her and Pō and Harthe take the rear, and they all set off. While they were walking, Jodi whispered to Selestine that she has a friend behind her and that she wasn't sure if she knew about it or not. Selestine looked surprised and asked "you can see her?". Jodi said "only sometimes". She told Selestine that she seemed like a good person so wanted to warn her to be careful around Pō because they don't like that kind of a friend. She said she didn't know the details but they have some sort of relationship with death and that their brother is an owl. Selestine said there was no need to worry about the "friend" as she was more of a nuisance than anything and that she'd move along soon enough and that she just seems to attract some lonely ghosts sometimes but she won't cause any harm. Jodi introduced herself to the air next to Selestine. Selestine laughed and pointed out that the ghost was actually on the other side of her but that she was waving back. Jodi said that maybe the ghost won't be lonely now and Pō won't be mean to her.   When they all reached the surface, Isobel Barnes ran out from a bush she was hiding behind and watching for their return and gave Ayenna a hug and welcomed the children all back. Jodi then told the children they would get them all home and that because they knew where Duncan lived so they would start with him. As they headed toward the front gates of the Nuvar Orphanage, they stopped by the front steps where Tuwar Braydon was still sitting drinking, smoking, and reading. Pō told her she should not let people steal children anymore or they'll come for them next time. Harthe used thaumaturgy to create a roll of thunder to add weight to their threat. The drunk half-orc was visibly shaken. Harthe told her she should give up drinking too. She muttered that she never even wanted the job. Jodi told her she shouldn't take that out on the children.   They left the orphanage and walked back up the street and arrived at Duncan's home. Theodelinda Whitfoot answered the door and threw her arms around Duncan and each of the party, who were very awkward about it, Jodi backed away. She invited them all in for dinner and said she had plenty of stew for everyone. Jodi asked if she could bathe first and the halfling woman showed the large tiefling woman to the bathing facilities, while the others awkwardly sat around the dinner table for stew, finding the smaller halfling-sized home somewhat challenging in their larger sized bodies. Jodi, now clean, returned and joined them for dinner. While they were all eating, Theodelinda disappeared for a few minutes and returned with 2 gold pieces for Harthe, Pō, Jodi and Selestine each, telling them she didn't have much to offer as a reward but she wanted to show her gratitude for the safe return of her son. Pō, Jodi and Harthe immediately return it saying that she needed it more than they did and that she should spend it on the kids as they've been through enough. Selestine looked momentarily awkward and conflicted before eventually also ceding the reward with reluctance.   Over dinner, the party asked Thomas and Ayenna about their home circumstances and why their parents hadn't reported them missing as well. Thomas told them how his parents had been away fishing for a week before he got kidnapped and he wasn't sure if they were back yet. Ayenna, very shy and reserved, told them she was from a very big family and her parents were rarely home, working multiple jobs to pay to put food on the table. Her siblings were rowdy and didn't often notice if and when she was there or not. Harthe expressed concern about where Thomas would stay if his parents still weren't home. Theodelinda told them she would look after him. As they were leaving, Pō told the halfling woman that as a thank you to them she should keep an eye on Thomas and Ayenna as it didn't seem like anyone was paying them much attention to them at home. Theodelinda promised she would. Harthe followed up that she should also now and then pop down to the orphanage to remind Tuwar what they did for them and that she should stay in line. The halfling was confused why Tuwar was in charge and not Meira Caizeiros. She said she would find out where Meira was.   They left with Ayenna and Thomas and headed to Ayenna's home. Upon arrival, one of her brothers asked where the hell she'd been and that they'd been looking for her but didn't know where to go or what to do. Pō told them matter of factly that she'd been kidnapped by monsters. He told her she needed to stop running off. One of Ayenna's older sisters overheard and scooped the young girl up and asked if she was hungry and if she was ok. Ayenna told them she'd just had dinner at Mrs Whitfoot's but that she was still a bit hungry, so her sister took her inside to get food. Her brother thanked the group for returning her and that they'd keep a better eye on her and apologised that they had nothing to give them. Harthe waved him off and told them to just look after each other.   They then headed to Thomas' house where his mother burst the door open and rushed out to embrace her son. She told them they'd only been back two days and had no idea where he was or where to look. Pō informed her that he'd been kidnapped by monsters and all colour drained from the woman's face. She told them that his aunty was supposed to be looking after him in their absence. Thomas told her she'd never turned up. The woman looked angry and said they'll be paying her a visit and sent him inside to get ready for bed. Jodi asked if the aunty was Meira but she said no. They bade her goodnight and left.   Jodi suggested they go back to Haunui's and think about how to kill the goblin tomorrow. Pō voiced concerns about how much longer resolving the issue of what they'd originally assumed to be a ghost child in the walls of a house took and getting the children home and whether or not they were in a rush and should they spend time dealing with the goblin or not and deal with the issue of the artifacts and Wiley. Jodi said it might be best to go find Wiley as the longer they took the less likely he'll be alive or not already kidnapped by the Shadow Duke. Harthe said that it would be good to see if he's still alive and that he's getting old, but that he's been there a while and what's one more day? They decided that maybe they should come back later to deal with the goblin but they should crash the night at Haunui's and set off for Rouvray in the morning.   Harthe told them before they went back to Haunui's he wanted to go visit The Rude Spittoon. The others were curious so followed. Along the way, Selestine stopped a minute and looked irritated and bothered. Pō asked her if she was ok. She told them that "this guy is really itchy, I guess it's his magic abilities". The others looked confused. She beckoned them towards a dark alleyway out of the way of possible spectators. She told them that she had wanted to wait till after they got the kids home and pulled out the rat skull trinket and told them that it was fighting it and trying to get free. She told them that before she released it, she was able to ask the soul a single question and asked the others for ideas what to ask, suggesting that she could ask about what happened to Meira. Pō was interested. Harthe pondered asking if there was a network of kidnappers. After workshopping a bit longer, they decided about asking about Meira. Selestine crushed the trinket in her hand and a ghostly apparition of the cronie appeared in front of the group. Pō took a step back and Selestine assured them that he was harmless. Pō clarified that he was not afraid but that he wasn't sure how long he could hold back his own ability and that she should be quick. Selestine nodded and told the apparition to tell her all he knew about Meira. The ghost was confused and said he did not know who Meira was. Only Selestine could hear.   As it started to fade, Pō sucked the soul up and said that was super weird and shivered. Selestine looked confused and said she didn't know Pō wanted the soul too and asked what they were going to do with it. Pō said they didn't really want the soul but it was a long story but they help the souls find their way to the land of the dead so they don't get lost. Selestine starts talking to the ghost over her shoulder and asked her if she wanted to go with Pō. The ghost seemed offended and the group only saw Selestine's side of the conversation. Pō said that if she had a problem they could maybe help her. Selestine said she did have a problem but it wasn't totally up to her but it was a long story. The ghost seemed to pester Selestine and the others watched as a one-sided argument ensued. She whispered to Pō that when she goes to sleep the ghosts usually eventually leave on their own. Pō considered this revelation and inferred that they might be able to harvest the soul when Selestine goes to sleep that night and felt assured.   They headed again along their way and eventually arrived at The Rude Spittoon. The bar was packed and a band of troubadours were playing on the stage. Harthe scoped out the place for familiar sights and hideyholes but got the sense it had been completely renovated. They could all hear an unusually loud burp periodically over the din from the other end of the bar. Harthe tried to find the source but struggled to get through the throngs of people. He headed to the bar to order drinks while the others found an empty leaning table. The non-binary pale skinned, braided auburn haired dwarf bartender had an elaborate geometric design tattoo up the side of his neck. He introduced himself as Correus Stonesworn and asked for the drinks order. Harthe told him it'd been a rough day for him and his three friends. Correus winked and told him he knew just the thing and mixed up four Dark and Stormy cocktails. Harthe paid for the drinks and carried them back to the party's table. Back at the table, Harthe started to ritual cast detect magic to try get a sense of any magical items or where there might be things hidden. He saw an aura from the end of the bar and from the magical coloured lights and a vague aura coming from the musicians. Beyond that he could not see anything else of note. In the meantime the others divided up the coins they'd collected from the hags between them all. As they all drank, they felt a sense of invigoration and inspiration from the music.   Jodi noticed Harthe's odd behaviour, in particular as to why Harthe had dragged them all to this loud packed bar when they'd all talked about wanting to get some rest. She asked him if it was in relation to why he had looked sad on the boat when they arrived in Nuvar. Harthe said yes in a way and told her that the bar used to be Wiley's bookshop and he wanted to see how it had changed. She asked what had he seen on the boat. He told her that the house he'd lived in when he'd first arrived in town wasn't there anymore and that he'd come to the bookshop afterwards. Pō asked that he didn't have family before and did Wiley take him in. Harthe said only so much as he mentored and taught him, but he didn't live there and was just there often. Pō asked if he'd had other family or if someone else raised him. Harthe said not really, not at least while he knew Wiley. Pō asked if Wiley was like family to him or just someone he knew and wants to help. He said guessed he was as close to family as he could have had. Harthe said he wanted to come to the bar to see if there was any secrets hidden away somewhere because he was a secretive and strange man. Jodi agreed they needed to go find and talk to him. Selestine offered to help get him upstairs from the bar but it might be easier when it wasn't so packed. Harthe decided they should talk to Wiley first to see if it's worth returning and if there's anything to find. They finished their drinks (except for Pō who did not like it so Selestine finished it for them) and headed back to Haunui's.   They each headed to their respective rooms. Pō knelt on the floor and summoned their sickle and prayed to Kuzmjir about whether Selestine was good or bad and whether or not they needed to kill them or not. A significant amount of time passed to the point that they began to think praying was a stupid idea but then they got a peaceful and warm feeling. Jodi spent time oiling her glaive and armour and then headed to bed. Selestine took off her armour and climbed into bed fiddling with an opal worry stone and eventually fell asleep. Pō felt a pull to head to the hallway. They ducked their head out the door they saw a ghostly presence leaving Selestine's room. They harvested the soul and ask it reached them they whispered "don't worry I will find you a way home." Harthe sat on his floor and cast find familar to resummon Pip before climbing into bed.
