Lane Cottage
Lane Cottage is a small farm-labourer's cottage on Back Lane, Count's Yardham adjacent to a track leading into the rear of Pale Farm. It is tucked between that track and Aiekin's Smithy.
The property is owned by Pale Farm.
Purpose / Function
Cottage for the foreman labourer at Pale Farm, and his family.
Architecture
Wooden framed building with stone rubble infill. The roof is flagged with local stone. Despite the lowly station of the inhabitants, the building is well made, well maintained and sturdy.
The site is long and narrow and the building is two story.
History
Constructed by the owner of Pale Farm (almost 200 years ago) as a gift for their daughter and her new husband - who then became the leading labourer on the farm. The house has subsequently been used as the house of the leading labourer or as a residence after their retirement as a long-service reward. Only one occupant was ever turned out: that was because of a scandal involving the Pale Farm's maids about 30 years previously.
