Field Gate, Count's Yardham
This gate sits in the wall of Count's Yardham at the point where Field Lane passes through it.
Architecture
To describe this gate as a gatehouse is to overstate the complexity of the structure. There are two great stones set as gateposts, and the two oaken gates are hung from these. To the north, the town hedge is reinforced by a series of posts with a shingled roof to act as a watch post - although most of the time, the space is used by local children as a play-house.
Over the gate is a walkway with half-logs arranged for protection of the walker. A series of steps have been set into the bank behind the gate to allow access to the walkway and watch-post.
